ABF your idiocy never ceases to amaze me. How is someone owning a ipod hurting you. the bottom line is that it isnt. If anything it sounds like jealousy. So why dont you check your facts before posting your 6th grade rants.

Apple isn't forcing anyone to buy iPods. There are alternatives. There are also several different music selling sites on the net. Isn't that the American way, to make a product that every one wants. Every company in the world would love to have a product like the iPod.

Where I am, iPods are common enough that they're not a big deal. (Just like how Linux is not such a big deal.) An Axim or Zaurus, however, is considered a rather special device. Certain homemade devices are even more impressive.

Now, the iPod could do better at its main purpose - audio playback. Someone tested some older iPods for sound quality and except for the shuffle, they looked horrible on the graph. (No data AFAIK for the newer ones, unfortunately.) I look forward to a MP3 player that uses premium Burr Brown output circuitry and direct drive.
Quote:
Also, with sound comparisons make sure you use good headphones. Headphones/speakers make a huge difference. To compare my Axim/iPod/Dell DJ I used Etymotic earphones and found the iPod to be best, then Axim, then dell dj, although all were very close in sound quality, and still my PC sounds the best
No current portable device can match a desktop PC for audio quality. I hope Apple is listening and is willing to change that...

Microsoft's DRM is ALSO proprietary and limits which devices you can use. In fact, buying music based on WMA DRM means that you cannot access 80% of the players in circulation.

So either way it's potentially an annoyance, but I think your problem with with DRM, not with Apple.

And both Microsoft and Apple let you burn your music to CD so you can then re-rip to use on other devices.
Except MS is more open and lets you use devices from different companies and not just ONE device that they make

I will tell you that MS has the upper hand in the DRM department for the future....apple is thinking music while MS is thinking Videos, Movies, TV Shows, Streaming into TVs, and Beyond. Yes, Apple has music videos and tv shows on their itunes network, but their drm is lacking in the Video department compared to what MS DRM will be able to do in the near future with Vista and streaming/sharing between devices.

Frankly, I think it is stupid to take a side considering we the consumer end up benefitting by letting the companies battle it out and we get to receive a better end product/s.

I have an iPod, I like it, I have a Microsoft PC, I like it, I use whatever works best for me :approve:

Cool MS DRM vs Apple DRM

Just thought I'd weigh in on the DRM debate.

I had a Creative player for a year and then switched to an iPod Nano. Why? All of the Australian sites that offer Windows Media music downloads have the most ridiculous DRM policies. You can only copy a song to a player 3-5 times depending on the site and burn a song 3-5 times depending on the site again. Contrast that with Apple's FairPlay DRM: Unlimited transfers to the iPod and unlimited burns to CD. The only burn limit applies to playlists. So in one way the MS DRM is more restrictive than Apple DRM.

As pointed out iTunes purchased music can only be played on an iPod. To me that is a very minor issue considering the iPod is a great music player for my needs. Although the Creative player I have has some great features as well (like built in FM radio).

Ok,
1: I got mine in 2003 before all this popularity. Currently, I have it as a spare boot "disk" for my apple...Of corse i havent needed it yet, but its there. I have plenty of gbs left, I also have 6gb's of music on it...

2: "the ipod haddent been invented then there would be no riaa."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA Acording to wikipedia it was created in 1952...Lets see 50 years before the ipod...So we'd still have it...

3: Another thing- Apple doesnt care about piracy much They have alot of dvd burning software compared to windows, and apple is not as strict.

4: No ipod = Something else would be popular....

I would really enjoy a nice player, but if I sink 300 dollars or more into a device I could more easily justify a 5 or 6 GB Cf card for Music and Videos, and save the other 150 or so for car insurance, and another months cell phone or Cable internet bill. If I had unlimited money I would get it but I don't see a need since most of us here have axim's.

I completely agree Frenchy. I've been using WMP and X50Mix also - and the sound is just flat excellent. My daughter has an iPod which produces a nice sound also - but it is definitely no better than what the Ax produces.

Once again the Ax eliminates another device.

gadgetnerd,

The 91 Apple Powerbook is generally accepted as one of the most revolutionary notebooks of all time and came a long way in defining the shape and layout of notebooks as we know them today.

I think LRRP used the term Macbook to refer to Apple's notebook line, not the specific Macbook laptop.

And no need for the personal attacks.

I have a powerbook down the hall in my closet from 1995 that looks a lot like the 3 year old Dell laptop I am typing this message on. Which came first no clue. Anyone have an idea when Dell started making laptops (or what they looked like)? Its easy to go to sites like low end mac to see pictures of those first protables but I don't know of any sites to see what the old Dells looked like.

My dad had a Dell Latitude from '95. I suppose it did look a lot like the Powerbooks of the time. 12" screen, 166Mhz PII, 24MB (upgraded to 40MB) of RAM, 1.5GB (bad sectors lowered that to 1.2GB) hard drive.... came with Win95, upgraded to Win98, later 98SE.... So, as I see it, what happens in designs is the following:

1) Both Sony and Apple come up with a breakthrough design simultaneously.
2) Dell steals Apple's design.
3) All the other companies steal Dell's design.
4) Sony decides its design wasn't so great after all and switches to Dell's design.
5) Apple realizes a flaw in its original design and changes it slightly.

Not just design, either. IBM started the PS/2 port thing, but Apple had invented the Apple Desktop Bus at roughly the same time. It used this in its Powerbooks until 2005 (kinda sad, using an interface for 19 years...)
Later, 1996 in fact, Apple came up with the FireWire (IEEE 1394) standard and started implementing it in their products. Shortly after, Apple became the first company to implement Universal Serial Bus ports in its products. It was not for a couple years until another company adopted the standard (namely Dell). FireWire has also slowly spread throughout the industry, but clearly not as fast as USB. Both originated with Apple. So I hope my point has gotten across.

And don't forget SCSI too (also originated in part by Apple).
