As someone pointed out - Vmware player also is free, and it's the original virtual machine software for windows (they created the market microsoft is trying to steal right now). It's really, really good.
vmware server is also free (just came out of beta actually) and a lot better than the player. allows you to create your own images and manage them.

I used a security-testing distro based off that, called Whoppix - and liked it a lot ...

You could also put one of those live cd's on a USB flash drive, I have "Slax" setup on a USB flash drive, and its simple to add/remove componants/modules and save persistent settings to a file on the usb stick.. anytime i want to mess in linux i reboot, stick the usb flash drive in and it boots to linux.

Nifty, 'cept I don't have 1GB of RAM on my home PC. I have Kubuntu installed now on the laptop. Got a little extra RAM for the thing, too. I might reinstall WinME for a dual-boot, but won't window Linux itself.
p.s. DSL boots crazy fast on the system.
You don't need a spare computer to run linux. You can run one of those live cd/dvd distro or if you want install to separate partition or hard drive and have a boot loader that lets you choose if you want to run linux or windows.
Ive been a devel for PCLinixOs for 3 years now as long as you have 256 meg of ram and a newer puter it has everything you need also including the installer in case you care to make the jump to your hard drive.
we also offer a Mime version for low end puters to download
check it out guys we are highly rated and we have quite a community to support you if you get stuck.
i really really want vmware, but when i went to download i saw that it had a server and a player.. and i would like just one app like msvp04 unless someone can explane to me that is...
im only gunna say this once:
SUSE 10 + GNOME = UBER OS
suse sucks, I'm sorry. bloated plus rpm-based distro's just suck. apt-get, portage, and packman (arch) are where it's at. gnome's decent, but I like kde a lot more.
