I find that with a good firewall, viruses do not get through. Also, spyware is not a problem. I download and run the top anti-spyware products now and again, but they never find anything because it just does not get there in the first place.
I recommend the ZoneAlarm Security Suite with the ZA antivirus and anti-spyware options turned on. It takes a bit of knowledge and ongoing setup, which I am OK with, but others may not wish to interact that much.

OK,I will come out of the closet.I have run Norton for years with no problems.True it takes more resources but I have always had way more than I needed.
I too have been using NAV as well as System Works for years.
I also run Lavasoft's paid adware/spyware program and, a few others.
Have Windows Defender, newest beta, that too seems to work well.
With the resources my PC has, never any slow down(s). :)
I don't browse unknown websites, haven't any games 'cept some windows defaults but, don't play them either.
My game (toy) is AutoCAD. Luckily, my work is my play.

I used to use AVG Free but now I like the free home user version of Avast!
Agreed. I used AVG, but now I use Avast!. Actually, I have both installed, but only Avast! is running in the background, AVG for scanning only.
Sorry, Tblove, I'd have to disagree. I've used Norton for about 5 years. Free anti-virus is WAYYY better than Norton (which you get for free at CompUSA anyway, but whatever).
I've even tried to uninstall Norton, didn't work out. Still left lots of traces behind, had to go into the registry.
My mom's laptop has Symantec corporate, thats not too bad, but Norton is a mean, green, system-resources-eating machine.

Honestly ... Symantec (corporate) is excellent. NAV is good too, just a bit more invasive as far as system utilzation goes. That and I don't like all the extra BS that they try to load onto the non-corporate version.
I agree 100%. Have used NAV for years & have been happy...but it is a resource hog! Takes forever to load at start up.
Symantec Corporate is great, it does not use many resources at all (less than most free solutions as well....). The problem is their Home User software which has a ton of graphical stuff and takes a ton of resources.
It does not include a comparison to a corporate version, but I have done similar tests and the corporate barely uses much more than nothing at all.
McAfee has the same problem, its a resource hog.
I wish these AV companies could make a simplified Home User version based off the Corporate so that the normal consumer could use something that works better/is not such a resource hog.

and this problem would all be solved someone were to make a "bot" that would mulitpiy rapidly and delete all the malware it enclounters that way there is no way it could be stopped once it is started...
Comcast provides McAfee anti-virus , firewall and privacy service, No complaints. I've been trying Windows Defender beta. No big issues, yet. I also use Spybot.

Someone tried that (or a limited version of it) via the way of Welchia (sp?) a couple years back. The amount of traffic it generated on a local lan was enough to bring it to its knees. I wouldn't expect you to remember how badly it affected things (you were like 10), but it was really bad. The concept was that it would remove MSBlaster and then patch the affected system. Great idea... horrible once implemented. And it was a pain in the azz to remove from a network once a few got infected.
Nice concept - but it won't work.

what about usein a code that limits the amount of them on a given lan?
My favorite thing about Avast! is how you can set it to do its scanning when the screen saver kicks in. That way I'm never bothered by it kicking in and bogging the system down while I'm doing something.
