I vote for using whatever the network access provider provides. Mine gives me eTrust EZ Armor. seems to work just fine and at no additional cost to me!

Along with the recommendation for whatever your ISP may give you for free... there's also Avast Home (which is free) and works very well. www.avast.com

I use the best AV out there right now (IMO) Trend Micro OfficeScan, but for a home user I would recommend the Normal Trend Micro Solution.
I would not recommend Norton AntiVirus solutions for home users as they are huge resource hogs and really slow your PC down (the corporate versions work well though).
For Adware/Spyware, look into Spyware Doctor. It has been rated by numerous places (including PC magazine) to do the best job at removing the most spyware/adware.
ABF, you should really dump Adaware. I used to use it all the time, but these days it really does not work that well. It misses a LOT of things and Microsoft AntiSpyware (Formerly Giant AntiSpyware) and Spyware Doctor are MUCH more effective. Spybot works very well though :)
Does avast take the place of, say, Symantec Antivirus? Thanks, I'll hang up and listen to your answer.
Yes it does ...
Avast is a direct replacement for a "pay for" application like NAV or McAfee and works quite well. The only thing they require is that you register with them and then re-register once per year. The registration is free and is more of a way for them to track how many users of the application they have (they don't spam you).
I used their apps for years and have been pleased with the product... so much so that we purchased (company) a license for their BART CD a while back, which was another excellent product and worth while investment.
Hum.. 8 replies but no votes (yet) for Norton's or McAfee.
Honestly ... Symantec (corporate) is excellent. NAV is good too, just a bit more invasive as far as system utilzation goes. That and I don't like all the extra BS that they try to load onto the non-corporate version.

OK,I will come out of the closet.I have run Norton for years with no problems.True it takes more resources but I have always had way more than I needed.
