Mad Doctor, nurses face Katrina murder charges

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/07/18/ho...ths/index.html

Quote:
-- A doctor and two nurses have been charged with second-degree murder -- the result of the Louisiana attorney general's investigation into whether hospital staff euthanized some patients in the days after Hurricane Katrina.
I hope they execute these people... This pisses me off!

I can't think of anything worse than having the people we pay, a truck load of money, to take care of us actually killing us because they can't deal with it.

Well, I am not going to say it is right, but you both don't know the facts. I read the story, and I think that if sacrificing some of the patients would save more in the long run, I would do it. Assissitted Sucuide is not really that bad anyway.

you've gotta be kidding me... are you actually saying it's OK to kill people?? I can understand assisted suicide, I'm actually all for it provided that the doctor can actually provide reasonable evidence that the patient wanted to be killed, but something like this to create vacancies in the hospital really is sickening.

Actually, most of that truckload of money goes to insurance companies and lawyers.

Baaaaad. You don't just euthanize people because they are taking up space. I do understand the principle behind "mercy killing" but when there is no cooperation, no agreement, it's not assisted suicide, it's murder. A person wishing to live should be allowed to fight for life as long as they are willing. I can also understand the atmosphere of desperation on the part of the health care workers as they were inundated with patients at precisely the time that their resources were severely cut short, but still you have to play the cards you are dealt. Mostly our doctors, nurses, and EMT's are nothing short of heroes.

Still not as bad as the nursing home workers who simply walked out and left all those old folks to die in their beds.

There are worse things than death; like locking them up and throwing away the key. I don't think they will get the death penalty, they've only been charged with 2nd Degree Murder, not too sure of the law in Louisiana though. And residing in a country with no death penalty kind of turns one off the idea of state sanctioned murder. Too much of a revenge attitude in the States and the executions are so sanitised, they really need to involve actual blood so as to remind those who witness an execution that they are actaully killing someone and not putting them to sleep peacefully(supposedly peacefully mind you). And before I get someone telling me I'm not American and I have no business complaining about the criminal justice system in the US, sorry I'm a US citizen. Enough Off Topic ranting on my part.

But I certainly find the actions of these individuals quite disgusting! I see a lengthy stay in prison in their future.

This story will unfold, then we'll know facts. So far, not good.

Murder is murder.

But i guarantee you that they didn't ask the patients that died if it was ok to kill them. and just because it saves more people doesn't give anyone the right to kill who they please.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't disagree with you more. There is such a thing as the sanctity of life. And as ericcumbee said, they took an oath to do no harm. If we start here, where does it end? It's a slippery slope to start down.

And, Reese. I don't know all the details of this story. I heard about it on the radio yesterday. But, if they did actually kill these people with overdoses like their charged. Well, then. Bye, Bye Doc!!!

I work in the health care field and this just mortifies me
I was discussing this case with some coworkers and there were mixed reactions, definitely.
Without adding fuel to the fire, so to speak, I'd like to add that you just don't know what you'd do under these horrendous circumstances. And I find it very hard to believe that they performed these "mercy killings" just to make bed space. I'm going to wait until more facts come out before I pass judgment on these doctors and nurses.
[/my two cents]

Murder?

Maybe so, maybe not.

maybe an overzealous act by the former Criminal Sheriff who ascended to the Attorney General position.

Before you judge any of these people, walk a mile in their shoes. The Government and Media either did not report or did not know what went on days after the hurricane hit.

NO electricity (GENERATORS on first floors, smart)

These people went for days in 100 plus degree heat
Calls that did get out from doctors were answered with NO HELP IS ON the WAY.
the Corporations that owned these hospitals made no plans to evacuate their patients and staff, they waited on the Government... we all know about FEMA

Hospital Staff were forced out into the waters to find boats so they could try evacuating the patients.

Not to mention, the Hospitals being broken into at an alarming rate by thugs assaulting patients and staff in their search for drugs.

I evacuated, but know many who stayed. I work for the local Government here and have been back since September 05, working on the Recovery of our City.

I actually live about 1 mile from the Nursing Home where all the elderly lost their lives... Now that was a crime.

Most of all, before you judge, read the newspaper and watch the news.. these trials will be underway soon.

I agree. How can you accurately pass judgement unless you were actually there. Those conditions were so deplorable, what's to say these people did not ask the docs and nurses to help put them out of their misery?? It may sound incomprehendable, but....unless you were there....
