I'm working on a list of apps for an installer CD of common everyday apps that Joe User would want/need.
The apps MUST be freeware and must be something to the effect of a utility or app that a general user would use... no C++ editor/compilers, probably no DVD ripping although DVDShrink is easy enough to use.
Basically as an IT person, everyone and their brother comes to me for free software and just computer apps in general. I decided to make a CD with an installer routine that would just install apps either enmass, or upon selection.
I'm working on the assumption that the user has a clean WinXP machine and no other apps. and yes I specifically ignored mozilla/firefox/thunderbird, IE is built in.

Firefox
FlashGet
TrillianBasic
eBay Turbo Lister (for the eBay users out there :) )
WinZip
WinRAR
SuperC (Encodes/Decodes/Does just about all video stuff) http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
DivX
ScreenHunter (for screen shots)
and IMO, Azureus works better than uTorrent and has a lot more powerful options/plugins, but if you only do a few torrent files or need something small, uTorrent is better.

Last time, I checked Winzip wasn't freeware (its shareware)
I'm using CCleaner. So far, haven't had any problem.
Let me add: Sketchup - 3D software (very easy, and fast)

I edited the list in the first post with some additional apps.
I'm trying to keep the list limited to just one app for a given function as well as try to eliminate apps that duplicate built in functions, unless there are some real bonus features in it. For example, Screen Capture apps are potentially useful, especially in writing documentation, but for that purpose the PrintScreen button is sufficient (or ALT-Printscreen) and paste in the document.
Desktop weather apps and desktop calendars and such have functionally equivalent modules available for Yahoo Widgets, which makes Yahoo Widgets more versitile.
Some apps suggested have a similar featured app in my list, like GAIM/Miranda. Obviously a user only needs one of these type apps, so I tried to choose one with the best feature/use/appearance. In this specific case, both apps have very similar feature sets and operation, Miranda looks a bit more polished, but each have a strong following so....
This is the same reasoning that I exclude Firefox and Mozilla... a similar app is already there (which can't be easily removed), so why duplicate functionality. Additionally there is a built in mechanism for keeping IE updated, where Firefox and such needs reinstallation and there are few notification methods of such for the lay person.
You guys are providing some useful additions, thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming

Screen Hunter - Free: I know you said you didn't need a screen capture, this one is easy and works for me. Not very fancy, but it allows you to pick a window and delay a capture. http://www.wisdom-soft.com/products/...unter_free.htm
