To be honest with you, when I first saw it, I didn't know which side of the aisle the Congressman was from. But I did think it was pretty funny. And even in the Fox (edited) version, it is easily apparent that Colbert is being funny and not asking a serious question.
I think any thinking person would have seen trouble coming from a Colbert Report appearance and not done the interview. The congressman was a willing participant in something that was sure to be trouble. Dumb!
Republicans have also participated in similar shows. I've seen John McCain on the Daily Show, but haven't seen media quoting him out of context from such appearances. This is a prime example of Republicans trying to influence their most ignorant supporters with stuff that intelligent people know is not serious and tongue in cheek. Sadlyand frighteningly, the majority of Republican support IS that ignorant that such clips work.
When dave letterman does greatness in presidential speeches, I laugh... You know what you should do with this clip??? Laugh it off. The only ones taking it seriously it sounds like are the ones who are diehard for wexlar.

I have to agree with Pebu. I'm not going to sit here and make sweeping generalizations about Republicans or Democrats. I think voters on both sides are generally intelligent enough to figure out that Steven Colbert is a comedian and that his show is designed to be funny. Like I said before, whether he accompishes that goal I'll leave for you all to decide. The only people who think Wexlar seriously made those comments are the same people who read the Weekly World News and think Bat Boy is coming back to suck their blood.
Can't see the clip cause its blocked here at work, but from this thread it sounds like the usual Lack of humor from Democrats. Ready as usual to take offence and proclaim wrong doing. Oh the injustace, come and witness the injustice!
Wait, bat boy wants my blood? wwwwhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I agree w/Pebu. I'm a republican and I too laugh at David Lettermans presidential speeches bit. He's not trying to pull one over on the public and make the prez look bad, he has poked fun at several past presidents!
It was just a (stupid) joke....that the congressman played along with...on a DIFFERENT channel!
Someone at youtube has too much time on their hands!

You mean he used to be real?

You can't compare Letterman to the Fox News though. Letterman is a funny show... Fox News isn't in the humor business last tyme I checked.
I've found that most of the people at youtube have too much time on their hands.
I do agree that political humor is polical humor, and it aims in both directions. Bush is president so he is fuel for much of the fodder. In the 1990's, it was Clinton. Not because the comedians liked one or the other, that was the material they had to work with. I've laughed at both...and I've objected to both. Some of it is just plain mean spirited and not very funny. But come on, who didn't laugh at Phil Hartman on SNL as Clinton demonstarting (with Big Macs) how warlords were intercepting food supplies.

I wasn't attemping to compare Fox News and David Letterman. The original interview appeared on comedy central, not fox news. The fox news show that aired the clip always ends the show with a joke of some sort.
I don't see the big deal. Fox *always* has a funny clip at the end of "Special Report". They have poked fun at Bush and other republicans as well as democrats. Its always supposed to be funny and never taken seriously. Someone has it in for Fox News
If this was Bush instead of Wexlar, would you think what Fox did was fair? Be honest. They didn't "Maybe so" edit the clip, they EDITED THE DAMN CLIP. They did it to hurt Wexlar. If this was done to a republican, I could admit it was extremely unfair and done on purpose.
You can be a republican, but at least be honest with yourself. This is blatantly wrong. Despite who they did it to you shouldn't stick up for it.
Edit: Yes, what Wexlar did was pretty risky, and kinda foolish being a politician, but that doesn't make it OK to smear him with dishonest editing.
If you saw the night the clip WHEN it was aired on Fox (as I did and others who have posted here), you wouldn't be confused about the editing. At the end of the program, as they do EVERY night, they show a funny clip that is meant to humorous, not really news. The clip was all about humor, not to imply anything negative. If you ever watch the particular Fox program on which it was aired, you would know that they are equal opportunity "bashers" and have shown HUMOROUS clips of dems, repubs, celebrities, athletes, and the list goes on. It is all about humor. Relax, watch the clip again, and take it for what it is - HUMOR.
