I am a full believer that everyone (or at least many) should be in the military for 2-4 years.
It teaches 2 things above all others, Discipline and Self Confidence. All the crap that the teenager thinks is too hard to deal with or too much trouble turn out to be not that big of a deal.
Think working at McDonalds is too crappy, try guarding a coke machine at 3am in 10 inches of snow for a few nights... McDonalds looks better by the hour.

I have no problem with the release of the information indicated. The military serves an important role in our society. The fact that it is an all volunteer military means that they have to actually make an effort to convince people to join. Not like other countries that have a mandatory period of service. Also, as has been mentioned, there are many benefits to serving in the military. So, no, I do not have a concern with the release of this information.

it's a nice thought, and would do good imo, but this is a free country and in times where a draft isn't installed than it's up to the individual.
but if it was mandatory think about it, what is it 96/97% of americans will never serve in the armed forces. man our troop levels would increase like crazy, we could take over the WORLD. yeah that'll go over well. lol

It is amazing to me that many in this country see the military as the enemy. It is the military that has allowed us to all speak up on a forum like this. It is the military that protects our freedom.
I got calls from recruiters after High School. Never once was I forced to do anything. I had the freedom to say "no thanks". That freedom to say "no" is protected by the very military I said "no" to!
People choose which colleges (if any) their info goes out to. That isn't an invasion of privacy.
I didn't get to choose which colleges got my info. My senior year I was getting lots of letters from colleges, that seemed to know an awful lot about me and my GPA, that I had NOT applied to.

Well, you can homeschool w/out vouchers, but you have to be willing to pay for it yourself! And we are, but it has nothing to do with the military getting info about my kids. It has more to do with with our liberal schools.

Your school must have been very different from mine. I had a super-high GPA and SAT score, and I only heard from schools I applied to.
Also, the provision says that parents must be told they can opt-out... but I don't think this is happening. Can any current HS parents let us know?
When I was in high school, colleges got all kinds of general information. I received hundreds of college brochures that I never asked for, even a scholarship I did not apply for. To be honest though, I don't think this information came from the schools as much as the SAT Board. Not really sure. Either way, I never saw it as an invasion since I was going to college anyway, I was happy to receive information from them since I might otherwise never have known about some of those options.
