global warming causes more powerful hurricanes? new study finds 'spikes' not accurate

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/loc...home-headlines
http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbc...607280336/1006

basically, the technology used to measure hurricane strength in the past underestimated the force of these storms. basically because it was old tech.

the number of storms per year is about the same, but now the intensity of the storms seems to be the same as in the past.

global warming causing more powerful storms?

Okay. Go look at the list of named storms, this has increased over the years. Please tell me you're not buying into the administrations version of global warming....we have a direct effect on the ecology of our world....we drive cars too much for one example. Were you in Los Angeles anytime in the eighties or nineties? I was and the smog was horrific. Mexico City is worse than that today. The cause? Humans. We pollute too much.

Landsea said he did not dispute global warming was occurring or that it could influence hurricanes;

Basicially, if you introduce too many gases and pollutants into the atmosphere, you get the greenhouse effect(a proven and documented scientific effect). Why is it that people buy into the lack of scientific knowledge these days?

Must be something in the water.

Well, enough pseudoscience and ear-plugging, and you can prove anything.

Global warming is a farce - there is no such thing as human-caused global warming.

The earth warms & cools naturally because of natural factors outside of our control.

People need to stop being such suckers for these environmental wackos.

There are thousands of scientists all over the world who have accumulated evidence suggesting that global warming does not exists. Of course, you don't hear this side of the story in the main stream media specifically because these people have a certain agenda and point of view they want the American people to receive.

What a bunch of gullible idiots.

Farce or otherwise, could it hurt for all of us to be more frugal with our energy usage?

Wow, I'm an idiot? Why don't you link to those "thousands" of scientists that can debunk global warming before you call people names. Quit watching FoxNews...you might learn something.

Must be something in the water.
but the increase in the intensitiy was measured wrong. wait no. conlcusions based on data is wrong because data gathering in the past did not correctly measure the intensity of those storms in the past. those storms are now believed to be more powerful than first thought.

it's like relying on pictures from cameras. at first the pics were in black and white. then tech improved and now we can take pictures in color. but if someone was to study these pics(without knowledge) then it could be presumed that the world in the past had no colors other than black and white and any shades in between the two. then as time went on color developed. but the world always contained colors, it was our way of capturing color that was problem.

this is like how they measured hurricanes past to present. as time went on tech improved and now we can accurately capture the intensity of storms, unlike in the past when we used obsolete methods that incorrectly measured intensity.

so if a hurricane in the past was measured at cat 3, it could very well be a cat 4 or 5.

Well it's like comparing Babe Ruth to Barry Bonds. they both hit a lot of home runs and did with two very different approaches. The earth has warmed and cooled many times over. Ice cores from Anartica that date some 600,000 years show multiple times of the earth cooling and warming...the poitn about global warming now is that we have accelerated the rate. Global temperatures were only a few degrees cooler during the ice age...one degree more(the degree that we have gained in the last century) can make all the difference in the world.

There is too much disagreement on what is happening and not enough solutions.

I've watched a documentary a couple of weeks ago that was talking about alternative sources of energy. It was said that China is also starting to look into this issue because statistics show that in a couple of decades, given the economic growth of the country, the number of cars will grow exponentially (don't remember how many more millions cars will be on the streets, but it was an impressive figure!) , as of course will the emission of carbon in the atmosphere.

Electric cars were a promising technology a decade ago, but nowadays they are completely abandonned. If I'm not mistaken, one of the drawbacks was the fast discharge of the battery, the lower speeds compared to a diesel and the very long charging time (1h or so). Today, I'm surprised to see "hybrids" make an appearance (tv & magazine commercials, etc.).

If only the petrol-companies weren't so powerfull, this problem would have been solved long ago (or at least would be in the near future).

they've also started to look at data going beyond 600,000 years. and it looks like that 600,000 years is itself repeated. normal heating and cooling cycles followed by a glitch(ice age, which starts with global warming).

this is a normal(to mother earth) cycle. why after all these years(since earth's birth) is it man's fault?

---------------------------

did some more reading on global warming and found something interesting. DID YOU KNOW, that scientists say that we are still in a ice age?

I am glad to see that there are at least some people out there who don't just blindly believe everything in the media.
Here in the UK there seems to be an acceptance by the media that global warming is, at least being accelerated by Man's activities, or at worst is caused by Man's activities.
This is obvious tommyrot. Three decades ago the British media were reporting on the impending ice age. They got it wrong then and they've got it wrong now.
The Earth's climate naturally cycles between ice age and tropical conditions. The Earth's ecosystem is so huge that any effect that Man can make is probably so small as to be immeasurable.
The Krakatoa eruption threw more pollutants into the atmosphere than all of our cars have ever done.
Think on that before we beat ourselves up over global warming. The Earth is more than capable of screwing up the climate without any help from Man.

The climate shifts are about every 100,000 years. The thing is that we have to stop the pollution that is making the climate changes happen faster. The Chinese will have a big say in what happens....with that population driving 4 times the cars that we ever could will wreak havok with the environment.
