Hmm Youth Football and excessive heat

I really need to vent. Mom mode: Youth football has just started this week. The first day was monday and it is amazing the difference in coaches within a league.
I was watching the older boys in comparison with my guys' team (10-11yrs) and I was making note in my axim of times and number of water breaks as my fury was mounting. The 'other' coach had hydrated his kids 5 times to our 2. At this point I went upto the other coach and commended him on this, he told me its a state law(NJ) that in this type of weather, the kids must have water breaks every 15 min. :exc: The asst coach volunteered to go over and remind our coach. He did, and it still took another 12 minutes for a water break. I was fuming, and ready to take the thermos over to my kid...at the end of practice monday night the other team had 7 water breaks to our 3. In light of the heat indexes/indices being well in the 100's I opted to keep my guy home tues night and practice was actually called off wens....practice tonight is at 7, but the heat index will still be in the 100's....but if i keep him home again he'll probably be labeled...you know what i mean. Why don't these coaches just wait out the excessive heat spell for safety's sake...there is a history of deaths in sports from exactly this type of situation. I don't get it...what can I do? These coaches want to be burly macho guys, but these are YOUNG guys....there is a beeatch in the neighborhood that called my kid a lightweight for ME keeping him home, right to his face ...i don't get people in general..i really don't...
any comments...thoughts...
sorry i rambled....

I totally agree with you! They need to cancel the practices during this heat!

As for the "lady" in your neighborhood. Flaming dog poo on the porch???

Here in Georgia we take High School football alot more seriously than most parts of the country. We also take the safety of our kids serious. There is no excuse for a coach being reckless with the health and well being of the players! You might find this an interesting read... http://www.walb.com/Global/story.asp?S=5227741&nav=5kZQ

I agree. My kids are younger, so we are just starting to get into the youth sports arena, but so far their soccer coaches have been great about the heat. It is now well documented that bad things can happen if you do not stay hydrated. In my opinion, there is no excuse for a coach who does not ensure that the kids have enough to drink. Heck, I know a lot of coaches here in Virginia who won't even let the kids practice if they don't have water on a hot day, or who bring their own water to practice for the kids.

I'm in Tampa, which is apparently the capitol of school aged sports related deaths...

There have been heat-related deaths from the current heat wave, mentioned in several news sources (see links provided by Radimus). Just print those out and leave them in the beeches mailbox. I can't believe people want to be so 'macho' (aka - stupid) under these conditions. And the kids should be encouraged to stop and get a drink of water whenever they want; if they wait until they really need a drink, it is too late. Stay in your Mom mode, it will help keep your kid alive.

excellent links, there's even video...i really do appreciate your thoughts...

...today we have an excessive heat warning again, issued by the weather service..if it's in the 100's with the heat index I'm gonna to keep him home again. I've had him running on the treadmill downstairs and doing the stretches and exercises he was taught the first evening each day he's missed (2)....(i just wish it was not such a big deal to other people if i choose to keep him home, for me i could care less what they think but when it comes to comments and labeling, it affects him..)

Annamaria, I totally understand and agree with you on this point! I just heard on the radio this morning that a local high school was starting football practices and they would only be in the morning and the kids would get to take a break as often as they like (temps here are near 110 with heat index as USMC - Ret. can attest to).

We just had a boy die Monday, I think, at one of the local schools because of football practice in the heat. It's just insane that coaches put kids through this. I wouldn't put a grown man through heat like this, much less a child.

Annamaria,
You are right to be concerned, but the league should also be involved in this. None of the kids should be out there with those trainers and coaches if they are not going to provide the right guidance.

I'm a bit past this age, but I have a daughter who played competitive soccer, here in Texas all the way through college. (go Horns). At some point she couldn't stop practicing, but she was taught at a very early age how to train, how to be hydrated, how t otake care of her body. The league had forced water breaks during games and we always had emt trained personnel available.

Children have to know how to continue to hydrate after practice and the days when they don't practice. There are other aspects of training health that must be learned from the beginning or there can be real injuries.

So yes, keep him home, but please work to get the coaches' methods changed and make it a league value. zero preventable injuries, nothing less will do.

yeah there was a death(dehydration related) near me a week ago or two. football.

I remember my last year playing(which was 5 days of practice before I was taken out, broken femer) our coach religiously kept us hydrated. it was very similar to that movie: forgot the name of it, but it was the most recent desert storm movie with jamie foxx. but where he had his platoon line up and drink, it was very similar to that.

One of the problems of dehydration is that by the time you can tell its already too late. The kids need to be stopped and FORCED to drink water (I would think gatorade or similar sports drink would be better though). If the team is not taking breaks every 15 minutes then get the school administrators involved. There is no excuse for this and there have already been too many deaths.

I just took a class on Islam and I remember a speaker we had who was a mother who was talking about her son and how he used to play Football. While he was fasting he continued to train which was the childs choice the mother said she told him he could make it up later but he did not want to do so. I was very bothered by the fact that she did not force her child to fast later and I wanted but did not ask her if she knew just how danagerous this was.

Annamaria - you've done the right thing. My daughter (11) is in gymastics camp this week (and during the last heat wave here). Getting her to hydrate is like getting her to do homework.

I did keep him home and in about 20 minutes he'll be on the treadmill for his workout...I showed him the link and I also had him read this thread...your responses are very helpful in getting him to realize i'm not being overly protective, just doing my job...while he was reading this the weather channel showed a tape illustrating this very topic...then I further explained to him that he has a voice and to use it, if he needs to break, break...be respectful to the coaches but take care of yourself first, regardless if the coach goes military.
All in all, this thread took on the life i was hoping for...information and reenforcement...thanks everyone for your contributions....

if there are any other links, great...but i feel much better, and kiddo has a better understanding as well... :approve:

About the gatorade and sports drinks, in this kind of heat (near 100) gatorade and other sports drinks are actually not good for you, because they sit in your stoumach and just heat. Water is actually the better thing for you. I play baseball and golf and during baseball season, (were still having practice even though the season is over because we suck....lol) the coach would give us water breaks during practices every 20-25 minutes, which was enough for us seeing as were like 15-18. But despite what most people think water is actually better in the intense heat.

I heard that in intense heat that 50% water and 50% gatorade was fine, a cup of gatorade followed by a cup of water.

Forgot where I heard it but I believe it was from a documentary of some sorts.
