The HDD on my Dell 700m laptop died tonight. The laptop is about a year and a half old and I did not buy an extended warranty I was hoping to put off buying any new computers or ppcs until next year when I was going to consider retiring my X50v and buying one of the new UMPCs (assuming they improve in price point from the current models). I can still use my 7+ year old Gateway laptop for some basic stuff, but at 333MHz, it's limited.
So, what would you recommend? New hard drive? New laptop? Steal my wife's 700m? Other alternative courses of action?
You could always go to a local Tech store after hours and get a new laptop and UMPC, but if you are not a shady type you could just buy a hard drive, probally 60 or 70 dollars.

I bought a hitachi HD for my old Toshiba laptop when it died. The toshiba was a 40GB 4200rpm drive and I bought an 80GB 7200 drive. Made a huge difference. Newegg is your friend.

Another vote for a new drive....

Thanks, guys! That's what I'll do. Very frustrating because I am leaving for a trip on Tuesday and was preparing to depend on my laptop rather than my Axim.
It's been a while since I swapped out a hard drive. If I go from the current 4200 to a faster 7200, will the BIOS get bent out of shape?
I would get a new Hard Drive. Dell is known for using slow drives unless you paid extra when you purchased the system so you can even think of it as an upgrade :approve:
You could also attempt to make an image of your old drive; the data might not be completely lost.
Check out www.hackaday.com for some tips, such as the "tap method" and the "freeze method."
Thankfully, almost everything on the laptop was backed up! :approve: I lost a couple of digitized videos that are no longer available to me, but I can live with that (I had planned to back them up this weekend)
@ABF - yeah, I'm pretty sure. None of my attempts to access it were unsuccessful....and then there is the unmistakable clunking and clacking sounds.

I swaped out my 40gb 5400rpm to a 80gb 7200rpm last year.
I don't know if it's the battery losing charge or the hard drive, but I've noticed a decrease in battery life. I used to get almost the 5 hours on the 8 cell, but now it's down to almost under 4
FYI: Becareful when upgrade hard drives in older laptops. Some have a size HD size limit. The laptop will not properly see the newer hard drive.
