So they give no indication what "version" of the XScale you may get.
Amen to that. Dell does not promise jack. Your paying for the 400Mhz thats what you get. If the 255 really made a difference in any axim benchmark then I am sure DELL would advertise the 255 way more then they do.
I have a 250 and a friend of mine has a 255. We see no difference in movie playback, games, or any apps.
If you really want to take advantage you need to get the Toshiba 750 series PDA as it has the new FSB speed (200mhz) for the PXA255 ... The Dells are only 100mhz FSB no matter which processor you get ..
But then again getting it you'd be paying a LOT more money in price for something that really isn't all that much better .. In fact the Toshibas have horrible battery life compared to the Dells from most that I've read that had them ...

Friend of mine just ordered one from newegg.com... he wanted the integrated wifi. I'll give it a test to see how much better/worse it is than our dells... :p
To be honest I do notice the difference not only in benchmarks. I had my B2 PXA 250 unit replaced with an A0 PXA 255 one. Utilities, games as well as multimedia apps especially DIVX start and run faster, and are more responsive with the new processor.
My personal experienance: I got my Axim back in December which was a 250 and then a month ago ran into a hw problem and my replacement was a 255 after I restored all the same applications I did not notice any difference at all. To be honest with you the Rom upgrade did more than the difference in processor speed.

1: You say you had yours replaced, was this
because the first one was defective?
2: Did you see them side by side?
and finally, to be honest..
I notice no problems with my PDA, DIVX movies start fast and run smooth.. So even if I had a new processor, I wouldnt notice a difference in how fast or smooth divx movies play.

OK ENOUGH already.......You're BOTH pretty...Hey, you're both right!
I've had both, the 250 (which I returned because of a poor d-pad) and the 255 (which I have now, with a pretty good d-pad) and both worked very well...I can't tell the difference.
That said, though, there are plenty of people on this forum (do a thread search on 255...) that were returning their 250's for the sole purpose of getting a 255 AND they were freaking out about it (so RePlay, you're not alone...). And again, although I can't tell the difference, I believe there were some benchmarks run which rated the 255 slightly better than the 250 (both in processing speed, handling processor intensive apps etc.). Also, I do believe that Microsoft is now requiring most pocket pc manufacturers to begin using the 255 chip for all new untis sold after a certain date that are using ppc2002 and 2003, but not sure.
So RePlay, I can see you point of asking the question from the marketing guys, and with all the attention it's been getting, I would think they would know. However, if it's that important to you, when you get your dell, check it out and if it's not what you want, either return it or exchange it. Dell is very cool with that. Either way though, I'm sure you'll be happy with the unit...it's a great little machine.
Enjo and have a great weekend.

The Axim is the best device/dollar PocketPC out there, whether it has the 250 or 255. The tiny difference there may be (that most would never notice) is not worth the $400 extra for that fancy 'other' brand. The Ax kicks AXX and that's that!
Oh, and who's to say you won't order that Toshiba and end up with the 250 anyway? I bet they don't guarantee the 255 either. Spend the $400 difference on add-ons and s/w!

I know...I have already ordered one...
But if i recive the 250..."#¤%%¤/()%¤"! - I will return it again and again untill i recive the 255.
Thanks Planet II on how to check it. I just checked mine and it is a PXA 255. I ordered mine from Dell on Friday,May 30,2003 and received it on June 4, 2003. So they must be shipping the 255.
