Exclamation Dell refuses to answer...

I have ordered a Axim 400Mhz...

I will recive it in 3 weeks.

Now to my phonecall with Dell:

When i talked to Dell - i asked them if i would get the PXA 250 or the 255 - AO2 or AO3...

They didn't know!

I asked if i could get the 255...

They coulden't tell...

I asked - Why should i pay for the 250 when the 255 is avaible?

- "We can't guarantee that you will get the 255...bla bla bla"...

My thoughts:

Why pay for the 250 when i should pay and recive the 255???

Should i cancel my order?

I'd stick with it. Chances are that at this point in time, any new Axim will be the 255.

Hmmm...

But what if they send with the "old" one...

I don't want to have the 250 when the 255 are avaible...
Why pay for the "old" version?

Why do you think it matter which one you get? You can't tell the difference... The 250 isn't "old"... iPAQs still have them....

That isn't a valid point. How do you know what version of any chipset is in a computer? You are buying a 400mhz XScale.... What is the problem with that?

Dell sells it as a "Intel® XScaleTM Processor at 400MHz"...

So they give no indication what "version" of the XScale you may get.

The 255 are more capable...if you look at various Bm's.

Exactly. There is no reason to base your purchase off something that is not advertised to begin with. There is nothing much different with the 255, so there's really no reason to cancel your order b/c Dell won't tell you which version it is. A lot of sales reps probably aren't even aware of what a PXA255 chipset is....they just see it in inventory as a 400MHz X-Scale Axim.

It may be more capable on a benchmark. Once you put it in an application such as a game, you won't see any difference. Plus I think the BUS speed is the advantage and the 250/255 AXIM mainboard does not have the faster BUS speed. It is not supported.

You don't know what you are talking about. Since when does a benchmark mean anything in the real world. I am responsible for both 250 and 255 processors and I cannot tell the difference at all.

If you feel that strongly about it move on and find another PPC that has the 255. To be honest you are wasting your time trying to find the 255. You'll never see any difference in the current generation PPCs.

I can appreciate your frusration with Dell not being able to tell you exactly what you're getting. But, be it a 250 or 255, you are still getting more than what you pay for if you decide to keep the Axim.
I have had mine since around March, paid a little more than what you are getting it for, didn't have a choice on 250 or 255 and really don't care. I still feel as if I have one of the best PocketPCs on the market.
Go ahead and get it, keep it, and spend your time fretting over which applications and/or upgrades you want to install on it.
You will still come out ahead :)

What are you talking about? I have no idea what the heck that thing is...

Benchmarks are for people like my brother who sit in their rooms trying to "massage" .0001 Ghz out of their "rigs" instead of enjoying life. As I said there is more going on here than just the processor. You get no added speed in real world applications by using the 255 over the 250.

As I said, if you can't life with that, move on and find a new Pocket PC other than Dell...
