Network Attached Storage, NSLU2, Linkstation, Synology or what?

I'm toying with the idea of adding some Network attatched storage at home.. so that I can access it at home and through the internet.

There are several little embedded linux boxes that will do this and also act as mini servers for other stuff (Mysql, php, web).

And of course it goes without saying that my trusty axim should be able to talk to it on the LAN and when I'm out and about in the big wide world.

Does anyone else have any experience with these? if so what have you got, and what firmware/distro are you running on it?

At the moment I'm probably thinking of the NSLU2 or the Linkstation as they both fall in my price range, and have a lot of features/flexiblity.

I know the NSLU2 has plenty of alternative firmwares. Not sure about the others.

You can use an old PC as a file server. For home use, it doesn't take much hardware. Go for something like a WL-HDD for on-the-go.
