Well, I got this email today, at 2 AM (do those Redmond ppl ever sleep?)
Quote:
Thank you for participating in the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program. Customer feedback is an integral part of our development process and your continued support is very important to help us improve the overall quality of Windows Vista.
This email is to inform you that the final major pre-release of Windows Vista - Release Candidate 1 (RC1) - is now available for download for CPP participants. Please use the links below to access the download site, and install this release as soon as possible. (If you ordered a DVD kit for Beta 2 you will receive a new DVD kit containing RC1 in approximately 2-4 weeks.)
Important Information about Windows Vista RC1 . We remind you that RC1 is pre-release software and you should not run this on production or mission-critical PCs. Support will be limited to newsgroups, and you may have to do a clean install to move from this release to the final release of Windows Vista.
. You may upgrade an existing installation of Windows Vista Beta 2 or Windows XP to this release. However you will have to do a clean install if you want to get back to a previous configuration.
. Before upgrading from Beta 2 to RC1, please install any Critical Updates from Windows Update for Beta 2. Go to Start, All Programs, Windows Update, and click the "Check for Updates" button.
. Please close any open applications before beginning an upgrade. During installation we recommend you have an active Internet connection and choose to "Go online to get the latest updates for installation."
. Installing RC1 requires a valid Microsoft Product Key. You should use the same Product Key that was provided to you (and sent in email) when you registered for Beta 2 in June. For your convenience, your Product Key is included here:
*KEY REMOVED*
. Due to the size of the download we recommend you use the download manager provided as it will allow you to resume the download if your Internet connection is interrupted during the process.
. As with Beta 2, the download for RC1 is an ISO file. After you complete the download you will need to burn a DVD to install RC1. For more information, including DVD-burning instructions, program information, and feedback links, please refer to the Customer Preview Program start page.
. To help you explore Windows Vista, we have created a list of tasks for you to try. To access the list and provide feedback on your experience, visit the Windows Vista Scenario Voting site. Windows Vista Scenario Voting
Again, thank you for testing Windows Vista. If you experience an error while using RC1, please send the information to us using the built-in Windows Error Reporting technology (a dialog box will display automatically). Sending this information is essential to helping us improve the overall quality of Windows Vista.
We look forward to your feedback.
Regards,
The Microsoft Windows Vista Team
There ya go, folks!

The product keys were given out during an earlier beta. You needed to sign up for that to be able to use RC1. To my knowledge if you do not already have a key there is no longer a way to get one.
I have heard rumors that they are going to reopen the CPP, but I cannot confirm them. Anyway, if you signed up for Beta 2, get this beta! Much better. But if you tried the builds inbetween Beta 2 and RC1, namely the later ones, there isn't much point, unless you had driver problems.
For people without a compatable graphics card, and were using Beta 2, definately get this one, Microsoft changed the Vista Basic theme, and it looks nicer, but not as spiff as Aero.

I got the email on Sunday since I had signed up for the beta a while back. Vista RC1 is much improved over the last beta that I had.
However, I can't figure out one thing. There is a synch center in Vista and Active Sync 4.1 doesn't work in Vista because it has native support.
However, I can only figure out how to synchronize video and audio. I can't for the life of me figure out how to synchronize with Outlook. I should probably mention that I have Outlook 2007 beta.
Maybe I've just got too many betas to be expecting too much.
Heh... you may also have noticed that the Office 2007 Beta Update doesn't work either...
Yes, I have noticed that. Right now, I've got Vista and XP dual booted and I mostly use XP. I mostly got Vista so I can check it out and get used to it.
Same wit me. I won't use it for real untill that get that stupid Outlook thing fixed. But I don't really need to sync contacts and calendar as of now, but I will.

Axim X51V worked in an earlier windows vista 5384 beta 2
it worked fine in build 5384 ,windows mobile device center popped up and all was good ,I now have rc1 and I can only use my device as a mass storage device windows mobile device center does not come up at all but, it does say you are connected when you double click the icon. so i say it isn't working properly in rc1. also does not work in build 5472(worst build).
I'm afraid that I won't be touch Vista with a 10 foot pole for quite some time when it is released. I have had nothing but trouble with bugs in the Betas. I'll take my stable XP pro any day.
