advice smoke/CO detector placement

I am going to buy some new fire alarms and a CO detector. All of them will be battery powered. I know the best fire alarm are the combination type - ionization / photo electric.

So does anybody have a good website that talks about how many detectors and were to place them???

twmiller - I'm a part time firefighter. Rule of thumb is one smoke detector on each floor, PLUS one very close to each bedroom door. We have one in the basement, one on the main floor by kitchen/basement stairs and two on the second floor. One the second floor, one is at each end of the hall, which covers the four bedrooms, which are across the hall from each other.

For CO detectors, one in the basement, one on the main floor, and one upstairs. Upstaris one may be overkill, but worth it for peace of mind.
