Upgrade 98 to 98se Cheaply?

I have an old computer with windows 98 on it. I want to upgrade it to 98se for usb ability, etc.

This pc doesnt have enough power for xp, and 2000 still looks expensive. That leaves me and 98se. I hear 98se is more stable.

Basically, since i already own the full version windows 98 cd (legally, of course) is there anywhere where i can still get a legit upgrade cd without spending a fortune.

I really dont feel that ms should have charged $ for it in the first place.
98 to 98se is like xp to xp sp2. It should have been a free upgrade.

Any help with finding this upgrade is appreciated. Or if you have an old disk lying around...

I did a quick check of eBay... most 'new, sealed' copies of 98se are about $70... a few cheaper.... I searched completed auctions for '98se sealed' and found a few went for about $25 plus $10 shipping.

It will take some patience, but you should be able to score a legit copy from eBay if you keep checking every day or so...

And... ABF: unless your friend removed all installs of the Win98se and all installs of any upgrades of it (e.g. a WinXP upgrade) you can't legally use the disc.

Where? We had dial-up back then and i was never aware of a free update. The link is probably dead now, though.

If i could find a friend with a cd, i would use it. But, everybody i know seems to have lost it or sold it. I wont fell bad if its not 100% legit, since this product isnt supported by ms anymore. If it was in stores, i would buy it there, but its been long gone.

I dont want a burnt copy, though.

Yea, I used to have one, but it's long gone now too, the oldest OS I use is Windows 2000 Pro, but yes I do use it a lot. But about 2 months ago, I actually went almost completely Mac, and sold my windows stuff, that's when my 98SE CD went away, sorry lol. So yea, I really like mac OS X better than windows, it can do a lot more in my opinion, but I won't turn this topic into a mac vs. windows thread :D

I like Linux a little, but I think he would probably rather have windows 98se as he knows how to use it. Yes I think Linux would give new life to it :P

Yeah, if you could get past useability (or whatever the right term for that is) it should be Linux on that sort of age box - definitely from any sort of security standpoint, that'd be the winner ...

Win98se was the most mature, most stable version of the "consumer" editions of windows. The later ME was bloated, and MicroSoft decided to abandon that line shortly thereafter.

Hmmm... I still have a Win98se upgrade license somewhere. In the freak chance that I dig it up before you find something else, maybe I'll let it go. Of course, finding the thing might require the help of Dr. Livingston...

This thread is starting to border on selling software.... it's not the classified, but the rules still apply.

I haven't used linux myself... 95 to ME are all very similar in my opinion. 2000 and xp are also very similar to each other, and I think vista will be totally different to everything.
