Exclamation HELp!!! Dell DVD drive reads DVD but not CDS anymore!

Someone help!! My dell lappy (1 year old) is only reading DVD nows and not CDs. What happened? Someone please help.

Well, it sounds like it's very possible your drive went out. My dell drive did the same thing, ended up replacing it

Ok. I jsut had a nice little chat with dell and they are going to be sending a replacement drive. They were very nice and quick. Great service. Wow.

It's almost certainly corrupt firmware. Since DVDs can be read, the hardware is likely fine. About the only hardware part that can fail to cause this problem is perhaps some demodulator circuits that are only used for CDs, and that's not likely without something else failing as well.
Try reflashing it.

Yep, that sounds right... there's only one laser, unlike the first DVD-RW/CD-RW/DVD-RAM drives which had 3... Or even older CD drives that had two lasers, one for reading one for writing (it's really amazing what they can do with a single laser, innit?)

I di and the dell rep did all she could and said that I needed a new drive. I also did some research and other people who had this problem also got new drives.
