One of the most poignant and surreal events in World War I involved football. On christmas day the Scots Highlanders, French and German soldiers got out of their trenches, laid down their weapons and had a game of football in the middle of the Somme battlefield. They then ate and drank together and shared what can only be described as a moment of clarity and normality in what can only be described as the worst conditions of war that has ever been experienced.

To me that's what football is about.

Cheers AlbaJoe - I did enjoy Glasgow a lot. It was kinda funny because I was in a job in London and someone needed to go to Glasgow for 3 months, nobody wanted to go, I knew Edinburgh a bit at the time but not Glasgow, had just split up from a marriage and said yeah I'll go. Ended up being a little over 6 months and I had a blast - made some good friends, enjoyed the people, the sense of humour, and the city itself - lots of good nightlife. Weather not so much to my liking. Think it helps a lot that I like a drink, and love pubs, just the atmosphere of a good 'local' - that's something I miss in the US.

I have not kept up with British clubs results this week - gonna go check on that now. And hey - that's one thing I definitely remember - there's no such thing as "my not so favorite" when it comes to Rangers-Celtic :)

The tension between England & Scotland in these games is electric. They did well to steal a win at Hampden then lol. When we played them in the return at Wembley it was supposed to be the last game at their stadium. They thought it would be nice to cap of the history there with a final humping of the 'jocks'... lol not on your nelly lol. I am sure that is what drove us on to beat them and it was very very close for who went through. The matches we have against each other are fantastic and as long as fans don't do anything silly (points at the English he he) then I don't think there is a single international match in the world that can come near it. Its always a David and Goliath epic and both sides just love it.
Its very sad that the home nations was dropped but that was in the days of some very unsavoury characters stirring up trouble on both sides. I don't think it is any where near as bad now. Mind you a m8 that came back from the Ukraine with the Tartan Army said that the locals were very very unfriendly with all sorts of preorganised attacks on our fans. LOL they were taught a lesson by the Tartan Army mind you. They may win the good will prizes etc. but wake the sleeping lion you are bound to get bit.

So did you follow the british clubs in Europe this week ? some nice results. Especially my not so favourite club, celtic.

Nice. And very true.

Possibly only matched by the poignance of the climactic 'soccer' scene in the Sylvester Stallone classic which I think was called 'Escape to Victory' - oops, no - that was actually a complete load of bollocks ...

lol 'escape to victory' nice one m8.

Sorry about the marriage split but you went to the right place to drown your sorrows lol.

The old 'local' nothing quite like it is there. Every local has a Billy Connolly, a camp male hairdresser and a barmaid that's been beat half to death with an 'ugly' stick.

Well off to watch the gers pump the italians tonight. U watching it ? iyou can probably pick up the highlights on youtube.

yeah, Stallone's body of work in the Ridiculously Stupid Films category stands up to just about anyone I reckon.

Marriage split - no worries - now very happily married (to a different woman).

The Local = true - and always a cab driver, and a petty thief - we had a guy at one local (superb pub) in Watford who was just spectacularly bad at robbery, but diligently stuck with it as a career. May add to the list of typical characters later - gotta try to earn my living right now.

Go Rangers ...

3-2 away win to Rangers. For a change they looked very very composed and full of attack. Again its all Scots boys scoring just like Celtic did last night. Dare I say it but the jungle jim's were also very good last night, I think they could go all the way.

yeah locals - there is always one called 'mad eyes' for obvious reasons. There even some who were just like 'grounds keeper Willie'.
