If your Windows box gets rootkitted you're "in the poo" no matter what firewall you've got.
ZoneAlarm might be too "automatic" to be a great firewall, but according to reviews it does its job.
Edit: I tried SPF for a while, and it was processor hungry compared to Keiro (Some setting I missed or perhaps SPI missing in Keiro?)
I don't use a software firewall on my PC. I use a router with FW features.
You COULD use both and to be honest if you're really not that sure what you're doing with your router it's probably not a bad idea. But if you're just using a router there are plenty of things you can do to lock it down nice and tight.

There's a site that tests how safe you are. I am traveling so I don't have the link. I think it is hackerwatch or something similar. You can check what your vulnerability really is.
Plus with those internet scans they can many times detect things that are protected but they think are not protected.
For example, my modem says it has ftp ports open, but in reality they lead to my router which gives them a dead end and secures them....so i get a bad score even though it is safe
How can it be safe it is isnt being updated anymore. Hackers find ways to get by these things, thats y they update.
Yes, antivirus programs need their definitions updated frequently to function. Firewalls, however, generally do not require routine updates to remain effective.
DaLabrador, likely Stateful Packet Inspection was turned off by default or unavailable in Keiro.

Just what I needed, maybe I'll try to boot up my old dinosaur at home. It dies about every 2 days. I finally got tired of re-intalling WinME and just threw it downstairs.
The Router Firewall should be all you need, for fire walls. There are a lot of aspects to computer security, the problem is figureing out how much you really need. Do you lock your doors at night? Bolt all the windows? Have a Guard Dog, Security Fence, Armed Guards,,,,, you get the idea.
Having a firewall on your router is like locking the front door on your house. It will keep most from entering without being invited. You also not be found on the internet as an unsafe computer to be exploited by people who search for those things.
OK, benots, thanks for giving me a laugh I needed.
The router firewall, on almost all routers, is USELESS. The Windows Firewall isn't all that bad anymore, but still not good enough to use on its own (besides the fact that it's a pain in the *** to use). Unless you have a dedicated server running a firewall (my uncle has two, in series... - and MAC Adress authentication, and 63-character WPA key on his wi-fi router... sigh, paranoid people...)

And yet, Uncle never gets hax'd, & viruses are unusual on his machine.
