I have adaware, spybot, avg and all of that, but do i need a firewall.
XP SP2 comes with one, but im on win 98se on my old fixer uper.

Is there a good free, not bloated, not resource hog firewall for win98se.

Free is always good and I used zonealarm for many years. However, today many of the most notorious programs will shut down your software firewalls and then have acess to the computer. Today the best bet really is a router, by design its a great firewall although not free you can probably find great deals online. Even if you don't need the wireless or multiple computers connected it may be worth it .

I am already wireless through a router. Software says i have a firewall, but i dont.

Right now, the router is the only firewall on this older (not my main) pc.
Is that safe?

No, it's not safe. Antivirus + Firewall is important. Trojans, unsafe wintendo services, worms, ..., ....
There are ways to bypass NAT (your router), and Wintendo will probably never be totally safe to use ( trusted computing aside).

A real hardware firewall (like IPCop mentioned above) increases security, but wintendo can still mess it up.

Better: Sygate Personal Firewall. Version 5.6 was the last version before aquired by Symantec.

DaLabrador is correct, you really should use a software F.W. along with your hardware F.W.

How can it be safe it is isnt being updated anymore. Hackers find ways to get by these things, thats y they update.
