photoshop type software?

I am downloading the Photoshop 30day demo that Adobe offers, but I was wondering if there is a free photoshop type of software out there--Something that offers similar capabilities, features, etc. One of my friends said that there is, but he can't remember the name of it. So, if you anybody has heard of or uses something similar to Photoshop that is free (legally), could you tell me? That would be awesome! CJ

A basic version I use is IRFanview. It's known more as a viewer though.

People recommend GIMP -- http://www.gimp.org/ -- it's free and is powerful, but coming from a hardcore Photoshop user, I find the interface to be a bit clunky and unintuitive. Another that people like alot is Paint .NET http://www.getpaint.net/index.html

If you want a lot of the bang of Photoshop for about 1/5 the buck, I also highly recommend Photoshop Elements. I've just posted my review and tour of the latest version today.

If you're interested, you can make The GIMP more Photoshop-like with GIMPshop.

Sue, thanks for your recommendation, and Radimus too. I just downloaded Paint.net. Looks great so far. For some crazy reason Irfanview won't work on my new Vista computer.

Paint.net is a great tool.

Gimp is more powerful, but much more complex. Paint.net will do most of the basic picture editing that most people need.

I have PhotoShop Elements 2.0, PhotoShop CS, and PhotoShop CS2 on my PC. There's newer Elements versions available, but 2.0 is fine for quick jobs. CS2 for more intricate work. Tried Gimp, but never really stuck with me.
