If someone has an appropriate image for the Veteran's Day link I will put it up beside the poppy...
In Flanders Fields
written in 1915 by John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Flanders, in north-west Belgium, was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the World War I. One of the few things said to have survived the bloodshed was the poppy. Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrea, a Canadian doctor serving on the battlefield, wrote this poem after treating the battle wounded and burying the dead.
My great-grandfather, 2nd Bn. Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, fell at the Battle of Loos on 25th September 1915. He is name is inscribed on the war memorial in my ancestor's village. Every time I visit it, I am overcome by a great sense of humility; truly, we owe them so much, and I can never totally comprehend the magnitude of the sacrifice they made. It is, I think, beyond all of us.

Maybe I've missed the point, but that is exactly the same as the UK. Do you not call it Remembrance Day (as opposed to "Veterans' Day")?
Yes, it is "Remembrance Day" in Canada. I guess I was confused by the "Remberance Sunday" reference.... I understood that to mean that observation in the UK occured on Sunday.
BTW... if you have any suggestions for an English/UK symbol I'd be more that pleased to add it to the first post.
Sorry, NC, probably my rather cumbersome drafting of the sentence. We have both Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday in the UK. It summarises it here.
I'm not sure there is a UK symbol. There is a website, however: http://www.poppy.org/, if you wish to add that to your links. A short history of the Poppy Appeal can be found here.

Thanks Martin. I have added them to the link collection. (Which nicely gives me a reason to bump the thread, something I will continue to do until next week....)
we must always remember what happened, and never let it happen again.
