General Computer Maintenance

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I'd like to get a comprehensive list of what good general maintenance on a computer incorporates. I'd also like to know what programs everyone recommends for these tasks.

Currently I do the following:

-defrag every few weeks
-full anti-virus & spyware scan (norton & ad-aware) every few weeks
edit - I also use norton's windows scan

anything else I should be doing?

Thanks!

and every 6 months to a year, back up your important data, wipe and reinstall.

It is amazing how fast a clean pc runs in comparison to "used" one does

I do enjoy the full system wipe from time to time...there's nothing like a completely clean system

yeah...once in college I did a wipe and forgot to backup data before hand...there's nothing like having to redo a few engineering projects to make you learn that lesson.

I use CCleaner/, it deletes all temp files, cleans old data, scans registry for invalid entries, deletes temp/cookies, etc.
And it's free :)

I use it DAILY.

I prefer to dump, wipe, then vacume up the crumbs.

Also, I would suggest MS Defender and SpyBot S&D. Be careful when you download SpyBot and Ad-Aware as there are a lot of spyware sites out there that have a similar named sites. The ones you want are www.safer-networking.org and www.lavasoft.de
