the correct short form for soft drinks is "coke". I live in atl where it all started. so I am fully qualified to say that all you guys are wrong. I went to the world of coke, okay lol
but yeah, when we talk about soft drinks in general we say coke. like "hey i'm going to the store do you want some coke?" now there is 3 choices from this point. 1 decline, 2 just say yes(which by default you mean coca-cola) or 3 you can say yes(then fill in the blank, to choose your soft drink of choice).
I call it pop but JMJSelect is right. The south calls it Coke because Coke was HUGE, and still is in my opinion, in the south because that's where the "Coke capital" (Coke HQ) is.

I've lived in the South my whole life (unfortunately) and I've never heard anyone at all refer to all soft drinks in general as "Coke." The term I'm used to hearing is "soda." When I hear someone say "Coke" they mean the actual name brand, which makes perfect sense. Coke tastes different from Pepsi, which tastes different from RC, etc...

That's weird, 'cause I have too and I hardly ever hear soda.

but yeah, everything is pop. even grape.
except for soda. but that's clear and bubbly and has no flavor. IT also comes in powder form.
Grape soda doesn't taste anything like real grape. I like to refer to the flavor as "purple."

Where in the South are you from. I to have lived in the South all my life ( I love it here and am proud of it) and I have never heard coke called pop or soda. The only time I have ever heard soda is on the Andy Grifith Show. Its all coke in Alabama.
