Hey everyone. This is the first time I have started a thread. This really isn't important at all, but I was curious what other people thought. Where I come from, we say pop. When I moved to go to college, everyone here calls it soda.
This is just a theory, but I think the people who say soda are the most committed to saying it. The only people I ever see correcting others are the "soda" people, but maybe that's just cause i'm in a soda area now.
We called it "pop" growing up, though we knew some folks called it "soda". It does seem to be the soda folks who make a deal out of it. As in "'Pop' is my father, not a drink!"
Actually, to be correct, we almost equally as often referred to it as "Coke". As in, "Do you want to go get a Coke?", instead of "Do you want to go get a pop/soda?" Didn't matter if you really got a Coke, Pepsi, 7-Up, root beer, etc.
Upstate new york we call it soda. Thats what it is.
My rural county had everybody call it soda except for one who called it other.
In my opinion pop is the old person word for it and coke is just one kind.
Another u could start, is do people call them kleenexes or tissues.
There are many other brand names that get known for the actual product, jello, tylenol, etc...

I grew up in Minnesota where all types of soda pop is called pop. Moved to Georgia where all soda pop is called Coke. Well, actually it's more like Co-Cola. To me a Mt. Dew is a MT. Dew, a Pepsi is a Pepsi and a Coke is a Coke. Just seems easier that way.
