It must have been a hydrogen explosion. When overcharged, the dihydrogen monoxide in the battery splits into hydrogen and oxygen - a very explosive mixture. (Hydrogen and oxygen is also what powers the Space Shuttle, BTW.) I think the relief valve failed or the vent wasn't big enough to allow the hydrogen and oxygen to escape.

I wonder how they triggered it. What makes the battery "faulty"? (Besides it's tendency to catch fire and invoke bodily harm..)
While watching the video of the exploding laptop, I noticed that the computer is sitting on top of what appears to be an electric griddle, used to make pancakes, flapjacks, what have you. Possibly that may have been the artificial catlyst used.

Well, guys you're going to have to believe me when I say this, but my Compaq laptop without a Sony battery in it caught fire today. I was using it outside (thank God) at a coffee shop to check my email as my mom wanted some tea, so I got on it and she was inside, so I turned it on, about 3 minutes later I hear this boom and there was like little stars and smoke everywhere, the force of the battery exploding threw me off the metal chair I was sitting on, and completely destroyed the table it was sitting on. I got a sprained ankle and some huge cuts and bruises, but other than that, Thank the Good Lord, I'm fine. There was no warning signs or anything, so I have emailed HP about the problem, I certainly hope that they will replace the laptop. As I said before, you guys have got to believe me
You either have the absolute worst luck, are technologically cursed or are just too hard on your gadgets. How many times have I seen posts from you about one of your devices dying ?
I'm technologically cursed, believe me. The problem is, is that everything I have is old stuff, and becoming unreliable, that's the only reason why everything breaks. The laptop wasn't a huge loss, I mainly use my macintosh, which thank god doesn't have a Sony battery, but yes I am pretty hard on my gadgets, I use them a LOT, lol.
