What happens when a faulty Sony battery catches on fire? Nobody's managed to catch such an incident on video so far, even though almost 10 million of the batteries have been recalled. However, some folks over at PC Pitstop have attempted to recreate the conditions of such an incident by intentionally forcing a generic notebook's lithium-ion battery into an unstable state. The result isn't pretty:
I know this was artificially done, but this video is pretty scary. I also didn't think about that a fire like this would be a chemical, electrical and metal fire.
Wow, you see when they placed the damaged battery next to the fire, there was a jet of flame; it was emitting flammable gases. Even if it's not heating or burning, the battery could remain extremely hazardous when damaged for some time.
I wonder how they triggered it. What makes the battery "faulty"? (Besides it's tendency to catch fire and invoke bodily harm..)

What your normally trying to do is overheat the battery. What happens with the Sony recalled batteries is metal causes an internal short which would cause the battery to discharge as quickly as possible plus since its an internal short the power would all be turned into heat inside of the battery.
All good Li-ion battery packs have a protection circuit on the outputs of the battery. The best will turn off the battery output if the voltage of the cell drops too low, if the voltage becomes too high during charging, or if too much current is being drawn (a short). Its possible to make a Li-ion explode if you short the cell directly except I don't know how often it will explode and how often you just end up distroying the battery.
I see. I wonder what causes the short? I guess it could be just about anything. faulty circuitry for example.
I also wonder in the experiment the method they used to replicate the problem. I mean, they didn't just wait around until it did it, did they?

I have taken apart a cheap Energizer UPS (burned out from excessive inrush current) and while there is a fuse, I did not see any overvoltage protection.
APC once recalled some UPSes. I forgot what it was for but it was something about the batteries or the protection circuits.

Well, guys you're going to have to believe me when I say this, but my Compaq laptop without a Sony battery in it caught fire today. I was using it outside (thank God) at a coffee shop to check my email as my mom wanted some tea, so I got on it and she was inside, so I turned it on, about 3 minutes later I hear this boom and there was like little stars and smoke everywhere, the force of the battery exploding threw me off the metal chair I was sitting on, and completely destroyed the table it was sitting on. I got a sprained ankle and some huge cuts and bruises, but other than that, Thank the Good Lord, I'm fine. There was no warning signs or anything, so I have emailed HP about the problem, I certainly hope that they will replace the laptop. As I said before, you guys have got to believe me

TAKE PICTURES!!!!!
seriously, we need to see this!
Sure, I'll get pictures, I doubt you want them as there's hardly anything left but pieces of metal, and I didn't think you'd believe me, but I will get pictures, I loaned my camera to my brother, he's on a 2-day retreat, about 20 miles from my house so he had to come home. HP emailed me in reply and said the laptop and the battery will be replaced completely, but for some reason they don't want to issue a recall just yet calling it a freak accident, which is possible. I don't think HP uses Sony batteries? I'll try to use my mom's camera phone to get some pics today
Sorry for the double post, but the screen is missing, it blew right off the hinges as the battery is located towards the back, all thta was found of the screen were some shattered particles and blobs of liquid crystal. One woman next to me was hurt by a fragment of the hard drive mount, which was the largest piece that survived, as it's made from solid steel, but I'll get pics of what's left, I promise
