It should be a pretty good upgrade. I'll probably get it for the my new computer that I am building. I have it installed on my current computer but can't use the Aero interface b/c my hardware sucks, so I'm looking forward to using it on my new computer when I build it.
While Windows/ME was quite the disappointment, WFW 3.11, 98SE, NT, 2000, and XP were not. However, being an early adopter of a Microsoft product would be called beta testing in any other setting.

Wasn't there a little program to download and run, that would tell the user whether a PC would run Vista successfully? I'm almost sure I even had it and ran it once but, since reinstalling XP, there are many programs I can't find.

As with all upgrades, remember your experiences in making any decision. All of the Windows upgrades eventually needed upgrade or Service packs to fix something that was missing or outdated. Windows XP is no exception, we have had SP1 and now SP2 and continuous updates. I doubt very much that Vista would be different. So, my advise is wait a year and see what bugs come up before buying or upgrading. Otherwise we will all be learning from your experiences with Vista first hand. Here is the link to the Vista website;
There are many factors that will affect your upgrade, make sure you read carefully what is required, always go for the Recommended, not the Minimum Requirement to fully take advantage of the features. And make sure that all devices like Printers, Mouse, Wireless adaptor and software are compatible with Vista which means you will have to do your homework with each individual manufacturer. Best of luck to all of us during this transition. John
I just got off the phone with a couple of Microsoft reps, who told me that they’ve made a change to the Vista license to accomodate the enthuiast market. (If you’ve not been following this story, the original Vista EULA prohibited transferring a copy of Vista to more than one other machine, so frequent upgraders could have found themselves buying a new copy of Vista every third upgrade.)
The new license will be included with the retail boxes of Vista and will be posted online later today. It states: “You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices.”
That’s enough of an improvement to make me happy. Edit: There’s a forum thread here.

Agreed, I personally ran Win98SE for as long as possible, untill SP2 came out for Xp and the hardware drivers were fixed.

well.... i am one of those ppl that will deal with problems until it is impossible to do so... (i.e. wm5... wow, also a m$ sproduct... looky there!) but yeah.....
i think i will do it just to see something new... if i lose data tho... i will be mad.. i definitely wil backup backup backup
I ran Windows98SE until recently. In general I didn't have many problems with it, but it did have problems dealing with plug-in USB devices.
Our office upgraded to WinXP about 15 months ago so I've gotten used to it. I upgraded my home computer to it early this summer. I don't have any problems with XP but find it slower than 98 plus it requires more hardware to run, but it does deal with USB devices pretty well, such as my camera card reader and my Axim. We upgraded at work because the design software we use requires it. I upgraded at home because of my camera software.
Regarding Vista, I would not get in a hurry to upgrade until I had to due to software compatibility. I'm skeptical that it will be a big improvement over XP.
Microsoft have never been interested in creating an alternative to other OS:es.
They make money.
If they spend alot of money on a product it WILL sell. It's as simple as that. Step by step we'll get forced to upgrade. It isn't a choice unless you go Apple or *nix.
I'll wait until I have to upgrade or buy a console for gaming and go with *BSD, Linux or OSX:ish.
Linux is getting there. Try it. You'll probably be surprised if you haven't already.
Oh, and the security issues will be fun to read about since they are making the same statement about Vista as they made about XP: It's secure.
