Mac WiFi Using Airport Express
I cannot connect to my wireless internet through my Dell Axim x51v. I am using an Airport Express, and every time I enter the WEP key, it says it is incorrect. It says the key must be 5, 10, 13, or 26 characters in length, but our WEP key is 9 characters long. Can anyone help me with this issue?

I had a similar issue with my computer. Can you tell me if your WEP is 128-bit or 64-bit?

One thing you might want to check is the key. It can either be entered as ascii or as hex. The axim and most other devices want it entered as hex. On my router I put in a plain english phrase that is translated into 4 different hex keys and I say to use key 1. On the axim, I put in the hex characters from key 1 and that is how a 9 character "wep phrase", for lack of a better term, can be translated into a 13 character hex wep key.

Using my airport express, I actually have to enter my mac address (26 characters) into my x50v, not the router password; tried that?

Actually, MAC addresses ae only 12 characters. The 26-character number is the hexidecimal key for 28-bit WEP. If Apple is labelling it as a MAC address, then they are are misusing the term.

you probably fixed this already but I belong to a yahoo group for mac users called mac_X and someone there was having some of the same problems and don't ask me to explain it but he said that he had to put a $ (dollar sign before the wep key) before it would work. leaves me scratching. But anyway, if anyone still has problems like this you might want to join the group and read some archived messages from around this date. It's pretty high volume but you can always jusy read on line and quit ya know

By the way, an easy way to find your hex password is to go to run airport admin utility, select the router, go to the top where there is a lock and it says privacy. That will tell you the hex password.

sdge: What Mac OS are you running? I'm running 10.4.8 and Apple Base Station V5.7.
When I launch Air Port Admin Utility, I see the AirPort base station and if I double click on it, I see a screen with a bunch of tabs for settings. On the AirPort tab I can choose "Change Wireless Security" and little window pops up where is shows my WEP Network Password (128 bit WEP). But it's just a bunch of dots.....I can't figure out how to get it to tell me what my password actually is. (It looks like it's 26 digits)

Ahh, I'm sorry I didn't really describe it that well.
Open up the airport admin utility and choose your router by double-clicking it. You get that screen with all the tabs and what not.
At the very top you'll see 5 (unless you changed the settings) buttons like this:
Restart, upload, default, password, profiles
Hit password, which has a little lock above it, and it will give you the long HEX password. All shall be right with the world again.

Bingo!! That did it! For some reason I didn't notice the little password icon at the top of the Airpor Admin Utility window.
Thanks!
