Extrnal HardDrive case question?

I am having a tough time deciding on what kind of harddrive case to get. I have found a small USB only(NO AC plug) 2.5" Lappy HDD case for 20 bucks, and I thought about buying it. I want to know is are the bigger ones better, and can I get a 3.5 inch harddrive case that is powered through the USB only?

As far as I know a 3.5 can't be powered by a usb port.A 2.5 can be powered ok by usb.

If you go with a 3.5" case, try to get one with a built-in fan, or one that has a metal case and has the hard drive in close contact with the case. I've had a drive fail on me due to overheating in a cheap CompUSA plastic case.

Here is the case I have and like.http://www.xpcgear.com/hddhousing.html
You can use either sata or ide drives.I have a 250 gb sata drive in it now and it works great,no overheating issues.I caught it on sale for $28.00 shipped.

I really want the USB Powered so I will go with the smaller one. I just have to find a cheap HDD to put into it.

No, they aren't. But they are cheaper than Flash. I have also found them somewhat less reliable than the 3.5" versions.
BTW, the unofficial "USB 3.0" can supply enough power to run a 3.5" hard drive. I doubt you have any USB 3.0 ports, though, since USB 3.0 is only in the testing stage last time I checked. But IEEE1394 can also power 3.5" hard drives, although it's marginal. Of course, some 2.5" hard drives will trip a breaker with the startup current, requiring a "hard start kit" (power booster) for proper operation. I have made one out of a 5v, 2A wall wart and a USB extension cable for desktop use. I'll design a supercapacitor-based version for mobile use.
You can also try to find a hard drive enclosure that can run off a battery. A small UPS battery can easily power a 3.5" hard drive for over 4 hours!

OO, the batttery idea sounds good, and I realise that the harddrives will be somewhat costly. I have accutally decided to skip it for now and wait to see if I will accutally need more space.

O_oa does star882 currently have a huge supply of those UPS batteries like a huge bundle pack from ebay "Lot of used UPS batteries great for hobbies" seems difficult to charge...

Anyways, how much storage do you need anyways? Those 2.5" laptop drives average $1/gig I currently use a loud 12gig drive I pulled from my thinkpad that drives me nuts as my external drive.

I don't use my external HD because I need more space but to mirror my desktop HD for backup. My desktop HD died two weeks ago and it was a pain to get it everything as it was so now everything is backed up twice on two external hard drives.I'm not taking any chances.

You can buy them from an electronics store. A 12v, 7AH battery (good for over 8 hours of operation) is about $18. They have some very basic protection circuits built in, but activating them destroys the battery, so you'll want to add your own. All you really need is a fuse and overdischarge protection. (I can help you design it if necessary.)

Use RAID 1 along with a tape drive.

I have an external hard drive case I bought that has a fan in it, but it isn't USB powered, which doesn't really bother me much, and I got the case for $15 and the hard drive was $60 (160GB Desktop Drive)
