I believe AVG is going to start charging for antivirus protection some time in January, according to its update pop-ups. I am currently using, of course, AVG which runs actively and Zone Alarm as a firewall. Primary virus/spyware checkers that I run manually are Ad-Aware SE and ewido. A few computers are also running Microsoft defender. I also use CleanUp! about every two weeks.
There was a post a few weeks ago listing freeware antivirus/spyware programs that I cannot find. The question is, what is out there that can replace AVG and still do a good job?
do you have a link to where they say they are going to start charging?

I am all my neighbors "computer-fixer". I have told them all if they would simply run these programs (at least) on a regular basis.....they wouldn't need my help as often!

False alarm, I guess... :approve: I just ran the latest update and I did not get the pop-up. I suppose it was a kind of intimating type ad trying to force the full version. Strange thing, I got the pop-up for about three weeks straight when it warned that my database was out of date.
I got fooled by that a couple weeks ago myself - thought they were discontinuing AVG free. Turned out they were just moving up to a later version. Installed that and all works.

Just for the record, another highly respected anti virus program, both a free version and a bells & whistles version, is Avast, from: http://www.avast.com/ About a year ago it was ranked top of the free ones.

Many thanks to you Susan for the links. I've been using AVG for years now and I'm quite satisfied with AVG myself. Thanks to others who suggested an alternative as well.
