I believe there are different manifestations of the infamous hacker. There are those who probe and prove that security systems have a hole and then leave a calling card. There are also the ones that do it for criminal gain either for notiriaty or financial gain.
Either way its illegal but think of it this way, at least the first one has given you a warning.

...and expose security vulnerability so Companies can rectify it before the second one abuses it.
My point exactly. When you think of it 'it takes a crook to catch a crook'. The likes of Norton and Microsoft probably recruit these people, in fact I am sure of it.
Even those who get caught are assured jobs when they get out. I remember a movie about a conman who was hired by the FBI for his expertise. Catch Me if you Can.
does get the honest programmers working on security
I am all for security where it is needed; however, if these sociopaths were not rampaging around the net in acts of irresponsible and wanton destruction and vandalism a very good argument could be made for not needing such stringent security on every site.
Any suggestion that these lowlife nerds are contributing to society or to the overall state of computing security is unilaterally rejected as absurd. They have less contribution than the bacteria in the intestinal tracts of dead and decaying roadkill.

as I say there are two kinds of hackers. I have heard many stories of the Robin Hood types hacking banks etc and warning thwm of the holes they have. There is also the UK guy that hacked and I mean totally hacked the American Pentagon leaving messages like 'you are not secure', 'i could be a terrorist' etc.
I saw a TV doc about the hackers and there is very much two camps:
The enthusiasts called, hackers
and
The criminals called, criminals

I am sure that they would prefer to be thought of as elite by referring to themselves as "hackers" or "enthusiasts"; however, the fact of the matter is that they are simply criminals. Their intent in no way alters their actions or the results of those actions.
If they had broken into your house and spray painted this on your walls it would have been the actions of an enthusiast demonstrating the holes in your household security?
Do not "glorify" the actions of these scum. That recognition is their motivation. Recognize them as the pond scum they are and no more.
