I got the Creative Labs Vision:M and love it. Got killer reviews and the screen is excellent. It has the ability to play WMV and Xvid videos.
BTW Don't worry about iTunes support on anything. you can get around that. The first thing I ever do when I buy something on iTunes is make an audio CD and then rip that to MP3s. I can't stand not being able play my music on everything I own. Besides I am not a sheep and have to have an IPod. I wouldn't own anything Apple anyway.

Tell us how you really feel;)
My main issue with my Axim is that it's been too much trouble lately as far as crashes and reliability. I don't use it for much anymore and can't seem to get myself to. Maybe I'll download GSPlayer (is it even still around) and play with some tunes. As for being a Sheeple, I wouldn't go that far, just looking for convienance because with two little wound up kids I don't have time to change a whole bunch of S&*(.
I have to agree with you simply based on sound quality. I didn't have any other problems with mine other than that. It was obvious they didn't take that part into consideration as well as the limited EQ settings on the pods themselves.
Anyone with a Zune?
Does it allow decent EQ settings and controls, how's the sound (assuming you are into SQ like some of us freaks)?

well, i dont really know much about that zune, but we had some guests over last night and of them got a zune for xmas and he says he likes it. he says the sound quality is good and the interface is nice. i may be wrong but it is also less expensive then most ipods and i know for sure that it can play videos.
You could get a refurb iPod from the Apple store for $179.00 (30GB) or $229.00 (60GB). I got the 30GB at the beginning of October and it is still working good. They put a new casing on them so they look brand new.

Just so we're clear then, that's both the Zune -and- the iPod that you don't know much about. Thanks for the credible advice though ;)

My view is get a new iPod. If you don't mind only holding part of your music collection I would go for the Nano. For me the ability to get the Nike+ kit and have the player record your speed and distance while running / walking is the killer feature. I just wish there was a kit that hooked up to a bike. Also I have a few audiobooks from Audible and have thought about purchasing more which are not supported by the Zune.
Just for the record the iPod (30 GB at least) and the Zune (only comes in one size anyways) are both the same price $249.99. They both play video. They both have the same screen resolution (320x240) although the Zune does have a bigger screen (2.5" to 3").
If you do decide to get something other then an iPod I would go with one of the many other good players on the market today other then a Zune. To me if you don't get an iPod why pay $250 for a 30GB player. For example the Toshiba Gigabeat is $256 (Amazon.com) for 60 GB (Toshiba builds the Zune for Microsoft). Since your already used to iTunes and have your entire collection in iTunes the switch to a new iPod would be almost no work. I don't really see any features on other players on the market today that for me that would be worth switching if I were to purchase a new player.
Well I've started ripping CD's and then back to mp3's that could take awhile. However I took some of my playlists and did that first so I could put them on my Dell. I have to say that the Ipod's sound quality absolutely sucks. My Axim blows the Ipod away for sound.
I'm lazy in that I would love to just sync up to Itunes and go but the sound thing has me looking around now.
I've had my 20g iPod for two years; use it daily to listen to podcasts, as well as recording university class lectures. I'd be absolutely lost without it.
You must have an ipod with some of the sound issues then. My 30gb Photo iPod Sounds just as good as my X50v even with the mix program when i compare the same tracks.
AND NO it is not my listening equipment (ears/headphones) as I can hear the difference when I go to my PC (PC sounds better than both).
I have heard many that think the ipod is crazy good sounding (which it is compared to many mp3 players) so i can only take what others say to a certain point, i really have to see a reputable review or hear it myself to really know the quality of it.
Personally I do not like Apple at all, but the iPod is a good product that works well. It is popular not only because of marketing, but because it works well and is simple to use. Even my 70yr old grandpa could figure out how to buy songs and put them on his iPod (he had a heck of a time with the dell dj and that musicmatch crap that kept installing a bunch of other useless and confusing things).
I personally would look at the interfaces if comparing the zune and ipod. I like the zune interface more as it is a bit more appealing to me vs. the standard ipod menus (which are good as well, much much better than most out there).
Also, the toshiba gigabeats, while similar to the zune as toshiba makes the zune, are NOT even close to being a zune in the interface. The gigabeat uses the old Portable media center interface from Microsoft that is not really that great. The zune is much much better than the gigabeat.
I would look at the nano personally over the shuffle. The shuffle stinks as you cannot go to a song that you want to play directly (no screen/selection). With that nano at least you get the small size and a screen :)
