I have jumped in - Running Vista on Main PC

I know many have been running it already, but I installed on my main PC!!! I have been a horrible beta tester for almost a year, but now I am going to use it for everything... I posted this at Chris.Leckness.com, but thought I would share here! If anyone has questions, I will try... when I can to answer them.

I finally put Vista on my Primary PC. I have been in the Beta forever, but I am just now putting my workhorse to work for me. So far, no troubles with anything I need, INCLUDING THE ZUNE SOFTWARE.

The reason I took the plunge is two fold. First off, I returned from Vegas with some nasty performance issues and I got a Vista Keyboard Mouse set, The Microsoft Desktop 6000 2.0. This set has widget buttons and other goodies for Vista. Anyhow, rather than spend the time repairing the problems with my XP install, why not go forward.

I am running a Pentium4 Dell running at 3.4ghz with 2gig of RAM and Vista is running smooth as can be. I have zero complaints so far. I know there are many screen shots out there already, but now you get (or have to) see mine!

This is the Welcome Center. You can find out what is new, set up widgets, and more…

This switcher is one of the slickest graphical additions in Vista so far. Keep in mind I have only been running it for 20 hours so far.

This is the Control Panel

Yeah!!! Zune Software!!! Remember, it was not supported right when the Zune was released. Some folks whined, but really… Vista is not even out yet, how many people have Zunes and Vista already?

I will be messing with this some today, it’s a DVD Creation Application.

And wait until you see Office 2007, Awesome. The GUI is totally changed. Here is an email being generated in Outlook 2007.

Looks awesome.

Are you running it with "user" permissions or "admin" permissions? And if the former, have you had any issues?

User permissions. I disabled the others. I was getting pop ups asking me to "allow" too much crap. If I click something, I am allowing it!!

Next week I'm getting the vista corporate and mso2k7 as well.

I have to start testing/developing image based installs for corporate deploy...

BTW, Technet is having their MSO launch party this month, If you register online for the event and attend, they are giving away free copies of office...

I'll post the URL if I can find it again.

And we Brits will wait patiently while the Americans test it to death and get rid of the bugs

I received my new Dell Inspiron 640m (AKA: E1405) last week. I was a little hesitant about ordering the Vista upgrade; I'm definitely ordering it now! Especially after hearing many of the 'no problems' reports from here and TweakGuides.com. I got XP Pro with my laptop qualifying me for an upgrade to Vista Business. I will be getting Ultimate for my gaming rig in 12-18 months. I have no need to jump into the DX10 world as I have heaps of old titles sitting on the shelf barely played.

Office 2007 is looking sweet as well, I will almost certainly be picking up a copy on January 30 if possible.

I signed up to receive my upgrade to Vista Business that came with my new Latitude D620 (http://www.dellvistaupgrade.com - you HAVE to go there and fill out the form in order to receive your upgrade!!!), and I'm just curious as to what the benefits of Ultimate over Business are. Business has several major benefits over Home Premium, such as the lack of Microsoft's craptacular Media Center, er, crap (and its DRM as well), and incredibly improved support for Windows Networking. I really can't see any giant differences between Business and Ultimate (except the inclusion of Media Center, YUCK). Anyone have any pointers?

Ultimate also includes BitLocker Drive Encryption. Plus there are all sorts of freebies being released by MS that are Ultimate only; three so far.

My main concern with signing up for the Vista upgrade is that my XP license will be rendered useless if for some reason I want to revert back to XP. And if I do get the Vista Upgrade I won't be installing it immediately. I'll probably wait a few months and see how things pan out.

I wonder if the new Aero interface (or Vista in general) significantly decreases battery life, which is a big concern for me. I get 7-8 hours on a 9-cell which is exactly what I need for a day at university. Power points are a fought over commodity in the library; there are so few. Is there any one out there running Vista on a laptop who can shed some light on this?

Edit: Never mind, just Googled "Windows Vista laptop battery". Interesting...
