Computer crash

Just as the title says my computer decided to die this morning. I woke this morning went to turn on my laptop to view the new post from aximsite as I do every morning and to my dismay no hard drive found. After further research I determined the hard drive to be bad. Honestly the fact the computer died didn't make me mad. The fact I lost all my photos from this christmas made me mad ( I was going to transfer them to a spare disk today ) Always happens that way doesn't it? Well after I got over my mad I had a choice to make fix my current laptop or buy new. Many of you will say fix it....especially after you know the specs:
Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 1
Pentium 4 3 Ghz 800FSB
256 ATI Radeon
Bluetooth/Wireless builtin
80 gig Hard Drive (Currently broken as well)
1 gig ram
Plus much more
Bought 2 years ago for $3000

After thinking long and hard and researching the cost to buy a new HD, DVD burner, and battery (total cost for all parts: $600; I would do install myself) I decided screw and bout new computer.
New computer:
Dell Dimension E250
Intel core 2 Duo Processor E6400 2.13 Ghz 1066 FSB
2 gig ram
19 in digital flat panel monitor
256 ATI Radeon
320 Gig Hard drive (7200 rpm)
XP media center 2005 w/ upgarade to Windows Vista on Jan 31
48x CD/DVD RW
4 year protection plan (won't make same mistake I did with laptop: no protection plan)
total cost: $1,877.20

Moral of the story: Don't get screwed like I did: buy the protection plan from Dell or don't buy Dell. They suck about customer support if you don't have a protection plan. Many people would laugh but E-machines are gaining a lot of popularity. Their customer service out does dell with or without a protection plan. I say this b/c many of my friends have bought them and told me how they have been treated. Well I am done rambling on. I just wanted to write a quick note to say thank god i had my Axim today since my computer crashed.

What a pain. It's easy to forget that hard drives DO crash.
You have prompted me to back up my photos. I am a bit overdue and I have a lot from Christmas I don't want to lose.

I am really sorry about the loss. You wouldn't believe, but I experienced something like that just several hours before... Windows became dead (BSOD, also in safe mode). After format most of photos, music, movies, documents, game saves lost :( well, things happen...

I'm not sure where you shop for parts but $600 is on the high side.To get your laptop running again all you need is a hard drive and that can be had for less than $100 if you shop around.Check Ebay and Computergeeks.com for cheaper prices.Congrats on the new computer also.

Does the HD still spin? Depending on what's wrong with your hard drive, you might be able to have a tech pull the data off for you. Unless the drive won't spin up or the disk is physically scratched, you S/B able to pull the data off. The FAT file is probably corrupted.
