Dim Laptop part II, can anyone explain?

Ok, last week I posted that my laptop had suddenly gone dim and we couldn't figure out why. As you may or may not recall, we hooked it up to a tv via s cable and then I hooked it up to another monitor to try to figure out the problem. We couldn't figure it out, so I made sure all important info was backed up (by sitting in a dark room with a flashlight ) and trotted off to circut city. The told me for 59.99 they could do a diagnostic check so we gave it a go. They informed me that the backlite had gone out and it would be 500-600 to fix it, so I said "no thanks" and brought it home with the intent of hooking it up to another monitor and using it that way, for awhile.

Well, I came home, hooked up the external monitor and turned it on. Low and behold the screen had come back to life!!!!!! Now it is as bright as ever as long as it is plugged in. On battery power it is very dim, but not as dim as before the diagnostic check.

The laptop is 2.5 years old and I had noticed the battery has only been holding a charge for about an hour, for the last few months.

I'm thankful it is working again, and at the same time I wonder what happened?

Any ideas??

Check your power settings, particularly regarding "on battery power" to see if that's turning off your screen backlight.

When we were messing with it before taking it to circuit city, we were using it on ac & on battery.

What he said, in BIOS and windows. Your inverter may also be going dead/ loose but unlikely.

I don't know what happened to your laptop; however, I had a couple of similar problems with my Acer Travelmate. First up the touchpad stopped working and it turned out that (accidently) I must have pressed Fn+F7 keys together and disabled it. I don't recall doing that, but pressing them again restored the onboard mouse.

Following that, my sound disappeared! I certainley don't recall hitting Fn+up arrow but I suppose I must have done that too! Restoring the sound was straightforward.

The reason that I share my ramblings with you is that your dim screen (I have a stupid keyboard ) may have been caused by nothing more than pressing the wrong combinations of keys!

I have had the same problem as Jogga many times. But I have recently worked out why. After they have finished surfing various porn sites and writing a couple of emails to their friends, my cats love to hit a few random combinations of keys just to see what happens.

Buy a new battery, it is simply not providing enough voltage for the screen backlight to operate. And when batteries are slowly going out they are intermittent like that. And 2 1/2 years is a long time for a laptop battery

Have you checked what the brightness is set to in the BIOS? Also on a Dell at least they have the ability to set the brightness from the keyboard by holding FN and pressing the arrow keys.

If the brightness is changing by plugging in or unplugging the laptop I am almost positive you have changed the brightness setting for when its on battery power.

Yes, the first was a wild cat that we rescued - the others seemed to come along until we could tame her enough to get her to the vet.

Believe me, I never intended to have any cats. :rolling:

Well, I messed with the f8 button while on battery power and the screen is now bright again! Woo Hoo! I still don't understand why circuit city said their "diagnostic tests" showed the backlight to be out.

As for the cat........I guess I'll have to put a filter on the computer I wondered what he did all night
