What's up with the U.S. government saying that we have to have a passport now...

just to come back if we decide to go to mexico or canada (and there is a lot of Ax'ers from the latter) Now the thing i can't figure out is how is that part of national security? in order to come back home? I use to got nto tijuana quite a bit but nowwho, knows? what my drivers license does not tell them that i live in california and not to mention i know no spanish. Go figure with that thing they call "homeland security" give me a break
