P3 underclocking (router project)

If I underclock a 733MHz P3 to 550MHz or 366MHz, about how much can I undervolt it and still get reliable operation? I'm building a router and I need to keep heat down to reduce heatsink and power supply size.

Really depends on the Chip, just like OCing on newer chips it is not one set mark. Chips vary vastly in what an be stable.

i dunno. if i were you i wouldn't down clock/volt it. that is just asking for trouble. whynot get one of those snazzy micro-itx boards with the via chip sets? they seem to run very cool (there was a video of a guy taking the heat sink of of one and it still running fine) and they run very light on power.

try going here: www.mini-itx.com

Only problem is that is more to buy if Star already has a old setup laying around.

I know when I am building router boxes and stuff I just use pieces I have laying around from years past :p

I know that when trying to find a fan the went bad in my p3 box I forgot to plug in the CPU fan and it ran ok until I tried to play a game then it crashed. It runs a 1Ghz. So they do run cool when you do not put a large load on it.

Yes, I'm "recycling" old parts into a router. The motherboard is a small, old one.
I just like to know where to start with undervolting. I have to rewire the voltage regulator to change the voltage and I'd like to have to do it only once or twice.

I have used IPCop on my old one, but I plan to use ClarkConnect Community Edition for my new one.

I use smoothwall.

I have tried clark and IPCop but still prefer the interface, stability, and community backing smoothwall :)
