Marconi Plays the Mamba

Hi all, as you might know, I've been researching 80's music for some time now. The thing is the other day I've bumped into this rather neat song from Starship, We built this city. I've been playing it over and over again ever since... And well... After listening it fot the 1000th time I've come to notice it has some real weird lyrics... Does he really says "Marconi plays the mamba"?? If he does, then I wonder... Who's this Marconi guy? why is he playing a snake? what does any of this has to do with the song?

If anybody remembers anything about it, I'll be glad to know...

Marconi's claim to fame was that he "invented" the radio. The reason for the inverted comma's is that another man, Ferranti, also laid claim to the invention. However it is widely recognised that Marconi was the main man.

Mamba is only recognised as a snake but is eerily close to mambo, which is a Latin American dance. I know that the word mamba is what is sung but I cannot think of any other explanation. I'm sure though that someone else will provide the real meaning.

The Starship was one of the better bands of the 60's and 70's. They wanted to continue their career into the 80's but they found themselves not so relevant anymore as the Vientnam War came to a close and people tired of causes and just wanted to be entertained. So in order to jump back into the limelight they put out this complete piece of crap, "We Built This City."

Marconi was the inventor of the radio. If I remember correctly, by this time, The Starship, originally, Jefferson Airplane, was just a shell of itself by now. Only a couple of the original members remained. Paul Kantner had left in 1984, and he was the last great driving force of the band. It was now just a pop band instead of the psychedelic Rock Hall of Group it started out as.

If you really want to hear some good songs from them check out White Rabbit, and Somebody to Love.

Check out their Wiki for more.

@ ljkelman: Thanks! yeah, I also thought about the mambo thing...

@ stevenator65: Jefferson Airplane?? Of course I know them! What on earth happened to them? Ok, the song is a bit chessy... but I do like it... perhaps I wasn't there at the time to see those fine fine mussicians go all desperate for cash and such... Perhaps their work was a bit... missunderstood... Anyway, thank you for the enlightment.:approve:
