day before last i had just restored my system (hdd falure) and i keep all of my program installers on my nslu2, so i powered it up, heard the little "happy beep" amd away i go. soon windows prints an error message saying it cant find the nslu2. i glance over at the table opposite the one my system is on and ALL of the lights are out o nthe nlsu2 except for power. i immediately unplugged it. so right now im trying to get my bearing together and figure out what to do... i haven't tried plugging it back in yet mainly becosue i dont want to find out that a recently recored file is corrupt (it is the asus smart doctor installer in .exe form witch took me forever to find.
so the questio nis what to do now. 1. get a new nas and spend months worth of saved money 2.attempt to repair it costing time.
if you said 1 o nthe poll coudl you please suggest a new nas? my requirements are:
*msut have a usb 2.0 port for a hdd inclosure
*must have an ethernet port (obviusly)
*must not require drivers to acdess the disks or administer
Well, I would personally get a new NAS, I haven't had much experience with them, but I have a Netgear one, it's pretty basic, didn't cost a whole lot and I like it
Oh, and for all those that might not know, NAS stands for Network Attached Storage
Why don't you try plugging it back in? Or how about resetting it? Isn't the worst that can happen is that you'll confirm your suspicions? If it's broke, can it break any further?
Why try and make a decision that may not have to be made?
If it is broke, I recommend you turn a computer into a file server...works much better than NAS and is probably cheaper. If you dont want to go to a PC, i recommend the Buffalo ones, they have always seemed pretty decent.
The Asus WL-HDD can host a 2.5" hdd on-board, is administered via browser (HTML) and can act as your AP, but unfortunately is restricted to USB 1.2.
Incidentally, what does asus smart doctor do?
p.s. I'd fix the thing.
(X)
asus smart doctor is an app which reports the sensor readings of their graphics cards.
anyway the asus wlhdd wont work for me becouse it is restricted to usb 1.2, i need it to have a full usb 2.0
chris
Open it and try to fix it. More often than not, it's a very simple and cheap repair. I got a free 2.8GHz dual core P4 from a friend because a capacitor on the motherboard was leaking oil. (Recently, it started randomly crashing under heavy load so I inspected it today. I found some more leaking capacitors. I replaced them and a few others around that area in order to avoid having to do this again.)
