What is the point of Junk Mail & who's sending them?

I don't get the point ... nonsense verbage ... pointless attachments .

My mail filter does a great job of eliminating almost all, so it's not even an annoyance to me, just an inconvenience.

So why do people do this? Is there money involved?

Or is it purely automated.

If automated, who's running the apps and what are their motives?

Total waste of electrons ...

The sad fact is that there will always be those that want cheap drugs, watches, DVDs, etc and will follow the links to where ever the email directs them. If the junk mail is sent in millions, it doesn't take many buyers to make money.

Sorting thru spam (aka "junque") email costs businesses millions per year.

We need a good way to track the originators and prosecute.
The immediate future doesn't appear too rosy for that to happen. :hide:

I agree with Tankman. Unfortunately, with the spammers spoofing innocent (I think) people's addresses, it's just about impossible to figure out the origin of a SPAM message.

The average is in their favor. They sent let say 1 million junk. Only one 1% open them which is 10,000 and of these 10,000 3% of them place an order of $25. The total order received is $7.500. If the profit are in the neighborhood of 40% it can be very lucrative.

It is an irony actually that the freedom the web has given us all comes with the price that others have the freedom to harass the crap out of us. Without the web I would never have met any of the friends I have found here at the Leckmedia sites and I would have been ignorant of how much I needed Viagra, Hoodia, and to send my PDA that I am selling on e-bay to some unfortunate individual in Nigeria so their child can go to school.
