Guys, every time you watch a movie your making a copy of the dvd (and the fact that you remember what you watched means your saving that copy) and is therefore illegal. The only way to be safe is to never look at the underside of the DVD. If someone looks at that dreaded side then you would of shown everyone exactly what's on the DVD and better watch out for those lawsuits. Use common sense, don't give away copies of a movie and don't tell people you made a copy of it for your Axim.

and Zune, and for your File Server, and for playback on your PSP, and to upload parts to Google Video to show friends, and to playback on your laptop on plane rides,...
I said too much! :hide:

Nows the time you remove yourself from the Aximsite map! Watch out! Here comes Warner Brothers....
You guys didn't learn to pirate on Aximsite did you? Who cares (besides the studio)?

seriously this is getting out of hand. i never supported illegal software or music but honestly now im starting to change my mind. okay so i buy rights for myseflt to watch a movie? And now the movie industry is forcing me to only watch the movie on a DVD player? This is going out of hand. If you buy rights to watch a movie you should be able to watch it on any device you wish to. Stupid Warner Bros... I wonder if I could sue them? Heck I wanna sue the entire movie industry! Any ideas?

You only buy rights to watch the movie on the DVD. The movie is actually "licensed" to you and you don't actually own the rights to it.
There is only one way I know to get around it. Don't buy their movies, or just don't talk about it. If you don't live in the US you might be able to do something like what some countries are doing to iTunes, and sue them for being too restrictive. But for now, if you want to be perfectly legal, you better not let any movie touch your PDA! Of course, I won't say whether or not I've watched movies on my Pocket PC, I just mysteriously know how....
Wait a minute, there's "Fair Use." You can watch the movies on your PDA as long as you don't watch more then a few minutes at a time and it doesn't stop you from buying it (maybe that means another copy???)

As Clegs said, you own no rights at all, you are granted a license. Same as with most software, Music, Movies, services, etc.
Just because they are big is no reason to hate them, and that is specifically what people are doing. They have to have restrictions or else they would never be able to make any money (and dont use the old "They make enough already" idea, it just does not work from a business side as less people would buy, less money would come in, and crappier products would be produced).
People target these big areas as these areas deal with such huge amounts of money, but there is a lot going in AND out in production costs and such as well. Lots of mouths to feed along that chain before it gets to you.
I agree DRM has gotten a bit strict even for my tastes in the music arena, but as far as Movies I feel nothing is really out of hand currently. DVDs are licensed to you, same as HDDVDs and Blu-Ray. It is the same idea as thinking you can buy one copy of Windows and install it on multiple machines when you are only licensed one copy, it is just not going to happen legally.

With most software you are allowed to make a backup copy, with DVD's your not allowed to. I don't have anything against the companies because their big, its because they have a terrible business model. As soon as they stop treating us as crooks and return to treating us like normal human beings who don't want to buy two copies of the same movie so we can watch it on our plane on our Axim! If I buy a movie that is what I expect to get. The whole movie and be able to do whatever I want with it (as long as I'm not giving copies away). As it is now, when you buy a DVD you can only play that DVD on a DVD player. If you want to watch it on a portable media device (PMP) you have to buy yet another version for that device. I already bought the movie and now I have to buy it again!?
I totally understand not letting software be installed on multiple machines, I just think I should be able to pick what machine I want it to be installed on. In the same way, I want to pick where I want to watch my DVD.

It does seem weird and frustrating at times, but technically you are not supposed to make copies of your software either. It is illegal to copy OS discs and many times other program discs.
Seems like a weird comparison, but they both are the same concept. You are licensed to use it on a DVD player, nothing else. There are plenty of rippers and such out there that you should not even have to worry about it though.
The problem is if they start letting people do whatever they want with the movies, it would be an open format. Open format means that it could be easily shared and thus we run into a trust factor, and we know that most people cannot be trusted to just keep a movie to them self if it is an open format. Heck, some dont keep it to themsleves when its a closed format as it is now! Even perfectly normal non-crooks not trying to do anything would share movies and such with their friends like back in the VHS days, and it overall leads to loss of sales and income for the companies that produce the movies for us.
