Hey Grantz!
No problem, still haven't had the guts to work on it, got the "disclaimer" there.

Nope.. I keep it in Hibernation.
When it is Shut Down it doesn't wake up. The problem is with Hibernation. When it is in hibernation, any movement to the lid will activate and cause wake-up! :(
sorry to join the discussion late, but isn't hibernation where the data on the ram gets written to the hard drive? so it won't really matter if you pulled out the battery(that's if my assumption is right.)
I think you should not touch the laptop, use this to justify a new bag :approve: or if not use it this to get one of those laptop slips, or whatever they are called, you'll protect your laptop from being scratched inside your bag and it'll keep the lid closed.

Hi, came across this post while Googling for my own Toshiba laptop power problem and since people seem to be very knowledgeable here I signed up to post this reply.
Basically I am trying to disable my Toshiba Satellite 2410 power button. Why? The problem is it is a flat button above my keyboard and whenever my cat steps on it, the computer turns off. I never use the button anyway, as I use Windows Shutdown.
I figure this button can be disabled. Anyone know how?

Maybe, but I this Toshiba battery is not easy to remove/replace everytime you wanna take it out.

Your cat! Post a pic of your cat :) you asked for it!
As for the button, OK you don't use it to shut down, how about to turn it on? What do you use to turn it on. I guess if you disable that button you won't be able turn it on. If you go to Power Options Properties (underneath screen saver selection) you can change under Advanced tab, "when I press the button on my computer" from "shut down" to "ask me what to do" or to "do nothing".

Doh! Forgot about that! Though I guess what I was thinking is just to disable the "off" function of the button when the computer is already on, though that might be expecting too much. I like your idea of changing the function from an automatic shutdown, to one with a prompt.
Your suggestion of of the Advanced Power options was exactly what I'm looking for. Options are: No action, Ask me what to do, Standby, Power off. I take it that if I chose "No action", in other words rendering the button useless, that only applies when the PC is already on and won't stop me from using to turn on the PC?
Yes, No Action will only apply to when your PC is ON.
It will just disable the button when you are running the laptop.
It will still turn on without problems..

Buy a Sony Vaio FS series, and you'll have that functionality inadvertently. The catch is renowned for snapping off due to bad design, and as a result, cant press the action button underneath the catch hole. Sony don't want to hear about it, or insist on charging me over £100 for a tiny piece of plastic.
I know this hasn't been alive for a while, but it's what I've been searching for...
I have the same issue that the person who started this thread has.
Can't find a solution anywhere!
To sum things up:
There is no problem with standby or hibernate functionality. My computer has no problems going into or coming out of standby and hibernate.
The problem is that the lid switch is WAY too sensitive. I can't use the hibernate or standby features because even the slightest tap to the lid will activate the switch and wake it up (this is a bad thing when it's in my case). I've tried the powercfg route...but even if I don't standby/hibernate by closing the lid (but instead using the Fn key combination) it still WAKES on opening.
I considered lodging something into the little slot to just keep the button down...but this disables the monitor.
Two things works, neither make me happy:
1) if I put a belt around my computer and hold it TIGHTLY closed it USUALLY won't wake up.
2) if I HIBERNATE the computer, wait for it to power down completely, open it back up (at which point it will begin to boot) and when the TOSHIBA logo comes up (during POST) hard power it off with the power button... the next time I open the computer I have to push the power button to turn it on (this is what I want) and it will resume from hibernate.
There has GOT to be a way to disable the power on signal sent from the Lid HCPI device when it is opened!
Sorry Pal, I was not able to fix it, and eventually this problem caused my battery to malfunction and die, and also I stopped using the computer because the USB ports stopped working and the power brick had cable pinching. Anyway, I am sure there is a way to disable the darn thing (possibly alltogether) just to amputate it or to make it not communicate with the board at all. The best way is to open up the computer and trace the cables that sends the signal to the board and just unplug / clip those. The problem with that is it may permanently get stuck in "Lid Closed" position, that may not be good for the backlighting.
Oh the belt. Don't do that, it will cause your LCD to go dead because of the increased pressure.
If you find a way, please let us know. I would still like to disable my new toshiba's that functionality.
If your computer is new, how about tech support? They will know SQUAD! but you may get lucky with some advanced support specialist.. (very unlikely)
