Question Video capture advice needed

I am looking for a USB device that I can connect a VCR to and then capture the contents of the tape and burn to DVD; I have some old tapes that are not available on DVD.

I looked at the Pinnacle Dazzle but would be grateful for recommendations for kit, software tutorials - I've never done this before so any help.

Thanks

A digital camcorder will do the trick, but firewire connection may be needed for best results. I've converted some vhs to dvd by connecting the vcr to a camcorder that's connected to the computer via firewire.

You'll just need a basic video capturing/editing software, which usually comes free with most dvd burners or digital camcorders.

a dvd recorder is what you want since your end result is going to be dvd anyway and they are cheap these days about 80.00--> 100.00 bucks and you can use the real low resolution for vhs and get 6hrs on a dvd at the higher resolutions the quality is much higher than your old vhs tapes

Dabs have the vmate for 60
I just want someone else to try it out ;)

My dad went the dvd recorder route, and has done ok.

Good luck finding one. There is 1 this year that does AV-in, and it is $1100 US.

Thanks guys
I'm going to look at the Vmate further as it seems the least complicated solution and I have read mixed reviews of the Dazzle kit.

Alastair, I use the USB2 TV Tuner from Hauppauge (well actually, it's the older version of this) for this purpose and it works well. I know it's well beyond your budget, but it's something to consider if you can get it used. Hauppauge also makes other models that are cheaper (but do not feature hardware encoding):

My cheap Canon ZR45MC digital video camcorder has AV-in. Perhaps, the newer ones don't have that plug anymore. Anyway, I just suggested it just in case the original poster can borrow or have access to a camcorder. Then this is a free solution.
