Although mainly a Fedora user, I had Ubuntu (actually, Kubuntu) on the desktop for a few months. The wife uses the desktop so Ubuntu was a good choice between us having Linux, and her having a system that she could maintain. We found that while Ubuntu was easy for her to use and maintian, it was too windows-like for us. I've since put Fedora back on that machine, but the laptop might very well get Ubuntu soon as Ubuntu seems to better support it's hardware (specifically, Radeon X1400).
If you're deciding on a linux distro for a Windows convert, then by all means go with Ubuntu. I've installed it on a few friends machines, and just recently mailed an Ubuntu disk to another Aximsite member who requested it in PM. It's a great beginners distro, so much so that most don't even know it's linux. You can literally maintain it without ever using the CLI. That's a shame in my opinion, but people seem to like that. In any case, it's safer and easier to use than XP, for sure.
