What antivirus software do you recommend to run on Vista (Ultimate)? Give me the pros and cons of your favorite package. Thanks!

Try Avast - free for home users all you have to do is register once a year. I have been using it for a couple of years and found it very effective. Automatic updates to the database and the programme; runs quietly in the background and provides a good level of protection.

You could also consider Commodo who provide a free firewall and free anti-virus; I use the firewall and it works well.

I don't know a great deal about Vista per se but OneCare seems like a good choice. It's made by Microsoft (for a Microsoft OS) and the package covers three home PCs at a far better cost than Norton or McAfee bloatware.

I have been using Norton Internet security for years on my xp machines. So far it works great on my vista HP laptop with no issues. When I mean no issues, I mean that with Norton / Vista everything has been completely automattic - which is great!

Avast - Beat AVG in the latest round of independent virus tests.

But then again, it was very close so either one is good. I use Avast though. Never let me down and you cannot complain with free :)

Nod32 will beat any anti-virus app hands down.

I demo'd onecare, and I would recommend you stay far away from it.

I agree onecare is crap for antivirus. Nod32 is not the end all though. I have had better luck with Trend Officescan vs. Nod32.

Then again, Officescan is not for consumers and costs a cool $6000

To each his own. I'm convinced that Nod32 is the end all. Nothing gets past it.

If anyone recommends Norton or Mcafee run. Run very far away! lol I say this because if you do have issues with either; they both are very hard to uninstall. I would recommend AVG if you want free and Trend Micro if you want to pay for one. With Trend Micro, you get a 3 year subscription with purchase unlike Norton and Mcafee. Also if you did want to uninstall it will go away laving no trace of it behind. I am personally using Trend Micro. I have used AVG and might still be using it but I got Trend Micro with my new system. I didn't uninstall as it impressed me that much :)

Thanks for all the great input! I have used both Norton and McAfee and I will be avoiding them in the future. Like pouring molasses in my system. NOD32 looks interesting but I like the price of AVG and Avast. I don't mind paying for software (although antivirus is something the OS should do) but is there a compelling reason here? Am I getting what I pay for?
Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves. $50 for antivirus when they've been selling us unsecured operating systems for years. They did the right thing with Windows Defender. Do the same with OneCare.
