Actually, the continent is North America not America. (South America is a seperate and distinct continent.) The name "America" by itself doesn't identify any specific geographic or political boundries.
That is not the answer I was looking for or what wiki says... but thanks anyway...

What answer were you looking for?
I read Spanish well enough to see that the wiki article you linked to refers to North and South America collectively as America. The English version , on the other hand, uses the term "the Americas" while acknowledging the overall ambiguity of the term America.
So it's really just a question of semantics and cultural practice than one of official names and pronouncements.

My new favorite quote (attrributed to Mark Twain, although i haven't been able to confirm the attribution or the wording):
"Those who don't read the newspaper are uninformed.
Those who do read the newspaper are missinformed."

It's okay, I didn't knew that. I figured out that you call the USA "America" just because the full name is way too big to say in a normal conversation. That was the answer I was looking for, but thanks anyway.

You're all wrong. I'll tease you with a hint: In a land where money can buy virtually anything our greatest status symbol cannot be bought :)
-----------------------------
@steve: Why do you think I'm a mind slave to limbaugh? and no it's not the SUV, our greatest status symbol has virtually zero envy/hatred factor. there's plenty of people who hate suv's.

First of all, the question is vague. Are you asking what proves one American's status is better than another? Are you asking what proves America's status over other countries? Or one American's over one non-American?
Not to mention it would be very subjective. One person may think he or she is better than I because he or she has a Bentley and a huge estate, while I may think I'm better than that person because I have a family... It's a question that doesn't really have much of an answer, no matter how many you try to throw at it.
edit
I use the term "better than" kinda loosely in there, so don't take any offense to it or anything.
yeah sorry about the vagueness, the first one: what proves one american's status is better than another.
although I can't say this is true for other countries(as the greatest) but I know this is HIGH within any country/culture if not the highest.
and trust me when I give the answer(later this week) you'll understand.

Let's see... What can't be bought but is a status symbol for individuals...
....
Length!
yeah, I also agree with that... Using inches, feet, yards and miles when you could only use one length unit, wich we, the rest of the world, simply call Metre. 4 instead of 1, if that's not an status symbol, I don't know what that is...

What about a picometer, nanometer, millimeter, centimeter, decameter, kilometer.... Oh, I'm sorry, metRE...
It's really not hard.. 1 foot = 12 inches. 1 yard = 3 feet. 1 mile = 5280 feet. Knowing that I can tell you how many of anything is in anything.
Oh, don't worry, I also know that 25.4 millimeters = 1 inch.
Something that shows wealth but cannot be bought... Money... You can't buy money...
I better just take this part out...
