okay this has gotten way off topic, here is the answer.
Answer
America's greatest status symbol is a long and happy marriage. You will not get any more genuine of a reaction to learning of one's successful marriage than anything else, plus there is virtually zero envy/hatred factor in it, and money cannot buy this. This is one thing american's cannot buy, we have to work for it.
This has got to be our greatest status symbol. I think a close second third and forth is successful children a happy family and old age.
what do you think?

I agree, now that I think about it, my marriage, of 22 years and my 2 kids are my greatest acheivements.
I was going to go with "Fat, poor people. Often that have a car, a microwave, and 2 color TVs... many with cell phones, standing in the welfare line to pick up their gov't checks"
I wouldn't go with marriage as that is WAY on the decline.

Personally, I would agree with you. However, our society has gone in the other direction I'm afraid. When I tell someone I've been married for 40 years they ask "to the same woman?".
I think if we are looking for a general status symbol, it must be the car.
Ferrari/Porsche: I've made it
BMW/Mercedes/Audi: I've made it, you know it, no need to be too flashy about it
Tesla: treehugger with lots of money
SUV: I'm a cool soccer mom OR I'm a cool guy that could go off-road if I really wanted to
Mustang/Camaro: I'm just cool
Camry/Accord: I finally made it into the upper middle class!
Old Volvo or VW Bus: Liberal
Old Pick-up Truck with Gun Rack: Conservative
Prius or anything hybrid: Treehugger
Homes are also great status symbols, but a lot more people probably see us in our car.
(Though I don't really fit any of the above. I have a Camry and as a grad student am definitely NOT upper middle class. AND, I usually ride my mountain bike everywhere, driving only about once a month or less--Berkeley treehugger that I am).

I think that's preetty much it. :approve:
What i undestand by the American Dream though, is having a nice big house in the country side with a couple of kids running in the yard. A nice car also works...

What about a picometer, nanometer, millimeter, centimeter, decameter, kilometer.... Oh, I'm sorry, metRE...
pico, nano, milli, centi, deca, kilo are base-10 prefixes. Good to know in any case (kilobytes, for instance(I know, kibibytes or kilobinary bytes. Still kilo)).
