First of all, the question is vague. Are you asking what proves one American's status is better than another? Are you asking what proves America's status over other countries? Or one American's over one non-American?
Not to mention it would be very subjective. One person may think he or she is better than I because he or she has a Bentley and a huge estate, while I may think I'm better than that person because I have a family... It's a question that doesn't really have much of an answer, no matter how many you try to throw at it.
edit
I use the term "better than" kinda loosely in there, so don't take any offense to it or anything.

No clue... I guess I'll go for the Hoggie3's answer...

btw, I always wondered why you call your country America. America is the name of the continent, you know...
The country's name, if it can be called a name, is United States of America.

Way to vague a question. Not sure what JMJ means by "greatest." In terms of how Americans define themselves amongst each other, I think the most universal status symbol is their Home.

Actually, the continent is North America not America. (South America is a seperate and distinct continent.) The name "America" by itself doesn't identify any specific geographic or political boundries.

My new favorite quote (attrributed to Mark Twain, although i haven't been able to confirm the attribution or the wording):
"Those who don't read the newspaper are uninformed.
Those who do read the newspaper are missinformed."
